Before I read this article, I think Chinese students always cheat in the exams because of the high study stress, but now I realize cheating is a big problem at campus in any country besides the Unite State.
Not just high schoolers, also college students they both admit they cheated when they were younger. But they deny cheating is a serious phenomenon. On the contrast, their teacher expose the myths about who cheats and why. In fact, cheating is a habit that takes root in elementary school, buds in high school and flower(複數) in college, and it more likely to get worse than to get better. The author uses the word of “shatter”, which means “damages or destroy” to let people pay more attention on (to)the present situation of cheating at American schools.
We discussed the para.1 to 3 in classroom, so I would like to focus on the rest paragraphs of this part.
During the para.4 to 7, the author analyses the reason of cheating of this problem. Although several schools give more open-book exams and hold seminars invited students to attend in order to cut down on the opportunity to cheat and solve the problem, The roots of the problem lie in the influence of parents on heir(her) action drives children crazy, they care more about the results than the development of their children’s morality---this pressure from the parents help from the children’s wrong values. To my surprise, it is the same as Chinese students.
Now, I’d like to talk about details in some phrases and sentences. I find this essay is much more difficult than the unit3’s. It is worthy of spending time in understanding them. Firstly, I am interesting(interested) in Para.7. According to the teachers and psychologists say, the gifts students are the worst offenders. As we know top students could get good grades without cheating, I wonder why they also cheat and someone makes it a way of life! What a pity! In order to get high mark in exam, someone peeks at other’s test paper; someone cheats with mobile phones, they all lose honest (honesty)and it is sorrowful of educations. Maybe the whole Education system should be thoroughly reformed. In addition, I find a special grammatical structure---and will do anything they must to attain---- which I think it is a wrong sentence at the very beginning. Then I read it again and remember here it is ellipsis because of the front predicate also “do”. Just like this classic sentence--- I will do anything I can to help you.
Moreover, I also learn some new expressions. The phrase of “cut down on” stands for reducing the amount of something that you eat, buy, use, etc. And “get a handle on” means gaining understanding or control of something. In para.8, I meet the word “issue” twice and of course it has different meanings. With the help of dictionary and reference books, I understand the “issue” in “an entire issue” means a subject or problem that is often discussed or argued about, while the “issue” in “issue a pamphlet” stands for officially making a statement. By the way, during the reading process, I also know the word of “folk” means people and “folks” refers to your parents and family.
