喬木、直立或攀援灌木，偶為草本。羽狀複葉，小葉1至多數，全緣。總狀花序或圓錐花序，頂生、腋生或與葉對生；雄蕊10枚，有時部分退化，離生或基部稍連合。莢果各樣，不分節；種子腎形、橢圓形或球形，種臍小，稀為長種臍，頂生或側生，臍溝明顯，常被假種皮掩蓋，胚根短，直或內彎；子葉不出土，有時具初生不育葉，或出土。
本族模式屬：Sophora Linn.
