早年
Barry生前作品埃文斯生於吉爾福德，薩里郡，出生後即被遺棄。埃文斯在孤兒院的寄宿學校接受教育，先在特威克南的Fortescue House School，然後轉到了比斯利男校。他的表演天賦在幼時就被發掘，他總是在學校戲劇中扮演主角。埃文斯又進入Italia Conti Academy學習，接著在18歲的時候獲得了中央演講與戲劇學院的John Gielgud獎學金，便離開了孤兒院。

doctor in the houseDoctor in House埃文斯出演的首部電影是《Here we go around the mulberry bush》。在影片中他扮演了一個急於又難以擺脫處男生涯的小男生Jamie。他出演的第一部電視劇是1964年的肥皂《Crossroads》。他第一次在電視劇中出演主角是在著名英國情景喜劇《Doctor in the House》,來源於理察戈爾登的著名小說系列，曾經被拍攝成為電影。埃文斯在其中出演了熱心又容易受騙的麥可阿普頓。這個系列有著強大的幕後班底，包括John Cleese和Graham Chapman，還有Graeme Garden和Bill Oddie，Barry Cryer。Graham Chapman和Graeme Garden都曾經學習過醫藥學。
Doctor系列的續集《Doctor At Large》在1971年推出。埃文斯很喜歡和這一幫同事們一起合作，之後，他說過，這段時期是他人生中最美好的時光。
1975年，他主演了Stanley Long的喜劇《計程車司機的冒險》，但儘管電影成功了，他還是沒有出演續集。

Here we go around the mulberry bush1977年，他出演了《Mind Your Language》。他飾演的傑米里.布朗是一所夜校的英文老師，教一些外來移民英文。以現代的角度來看，因為大部分外國人的角色都相當的刻板化，這並不完全合理。但是這部電視劇卻相當的成功，不管是在英國還是海外，特別是那些電視劇中有的國家。

mind your language80年代後期，因他的娃娃臉使他很難再找到成熟的角色，儘管他已經40有餘。他人生中最後的一個角色是1993年，在The Mystery of Edwin Drood里飾演的Bazzard。90年代後期，他在萊斯特做起了計程車司機。1997年，他被發現死於自己的公寓，享年53歲。
警察是在去他家調查他被偷的汽車的時候發現他的屍體的。詹姆斯里德比特（18歲）之後被懷疑謀殺而逮捕。詹姆斯對警察說他曾經是埃文斯的一個朋友，而在案發當日他去他家是告訴他他不會再來拜訪他了。詹姆斯說埃文斯之後心情很不好，並且喝了半瓶威士忌。埃文斯的死因至今為得到定論，驗屍官認為埃文斯並非自殺，但詹姆斯也因為證據不足而釋放。

1，Barry是一個雙性戀；
2，他終身未婚，終身也沒有任何親人，作為一個孤兒來到世界，臨死之前也沒有任何親友在身邊；
3，驗屍官在他的屍體裡驗出超正常標準4倍多的酒精濃度；
4，他的死因至今懸而未決。警方調查發現他臨死前曾經撥出一個電話給一位朋友，說他非常的不開心。但是驗屍報告表明他並非自殺，而是受到致命的攻擊身亡。
