unit3 8~9

ten ten ten

Today, I read the para.8~9. At the beginning of the para8, it has along a long sentence but it doesn’t stopping me reading fluently except for some new words. Then I am bewildered by the second sentence. What are the meanings of “in the news” and “all too”. I repeat them several times and fortunately unfortunately I can’t understand their meanings. So I have to look them in to up from the dictionary and some reference books. Then I know the phrase “in the news” refers to companies who attracted the attention of the media---in this case, for negative reasons. And the expression “all too” is used to emphasize that something happens to a greater extent or degree than in pleasant or desirable, “all too” is 去掉 means “very”. I really find in this paragraph there are many difficult phrases and words. Now I’m also bothered by others. The LDOCE tells me “within its own ranks” means within the company and “a year of profile” refers to a year during which the company made a profit.

The author in the para.9 points out that more and more companies are celebrating differences and individual ability, because using the varied perspectives that workers from different backgrounds make the company more enthusiastic and efficient. In second sentence the expression “high-profile”, which means “exposed to publicity or attracting attention”. In the essay, the company sends flowers, small gifts to someone’s spouse who does something worthy of recognition, hence I think the employees are more loyal and willing to contribute their knowledge, perform to the best of their potential and take the responsibility for results with the support of their family. I must admit it is the best way to connect the worlds of home life and work experience.
