Unit4 1-8
After reading the paragraph 1 to paragraph 4, it is too difficult for me to understand that I should work hard.
In paragraph 1 the main idea is trying to get a handle on scholastic cheating is similar to surveying American eating patterns. I have interest in this picture. Now I'd like talk about (it)for you .Because everyone says he want to lose weight, As 9as)the survey results show, the snack-food industry reports record(recored) sales. I do not think they tell lies. The snack-food is really delicious that no one can overcome temptation. II(去掉)appeal to them not to buy snack-food. Obesity(it) is a danger to health. Nowadays, there are more and more fat men in our world which (has being)been a greatly serious (去掉一個)problem. The governments are worried about it. Because many fat men can not work that maybe lead to lack of labor. Why have there been so many fat men. Maybe the reasons can be listed as follows. The first one is that many people eat too well, the food has much nutrition. Therefore, we call fat as rich illness. It is at least part right. Besides, people do not do any sports in a long time. In the past we went to work on foot, but now we are rich, most people drive car. To sum up, the main cause of fat is due to economic development. It is high time that something were done upon it. For one thing, we should play a lot of sport on the other hand, do not eating too much at night. All these measures will certainly reduce the number of fat men.
I have doubt about the word “handle” which seems to deal with something, but here there is a verb “get” before it. I'm feeling rather muddled up. I puzzle over the question for quite a while. There seem to be no more clues from the context. So I have to turn to a dictionary for help which tells me that it means “understanding”. So the whole sentence “Trying to get a handle on scholastic cheating” means “Trying to start to understand scholastic cheating”.
When author asked students the question “did you ever cheat when you younger”, Most say that, yes, they cheated when they were younger. Then author asked them anther question “would you still dream of cheating now”, the answer is not. I think they tell lies, from the word “but”, we find author does not believe them. So many students do that even me, I am a student; I know the inside of them. In my opinion, cheating is not a big problem at their schools. When I take the exams, my teacher is reading newspaper. Cheating is no problem. Due to teachers want to win prize for if students can pass the finals.
When author asked the same question to teachers, not only they acquiesced to the cheat. But also to my surprise, there is a picture of cheating among top students' at top schools. It is too crazy. I'm very much against the idea that some schools want to have a good public impact by encourage students in cheating. It is also disadvantageous to student. If they get into the habit of cheating, they will think we can get high Scores without study hard. It has a great influence on education. So everything has its advantages as well as disadvantages.
The main idea of paragraph 4 is several schools are giving more open-book exams in order to reduce cheating. It is very interesting, and I really like it. For a fact the measure quickly took effect. But open-book exams are more difficult for students to take, I am a student, I also hove took open-book exams several times. Through the answer in the book, we should find out, then use ourselves’ language to answer the question, besides, we would like write down what teachers write on the blackboard in the class or we will can not find the answer when we take exams. This is disadvantage to our study. I agree with psychologists who say that children must be helped to develop enough self-esteem to make occasional failure an unthreatening prospect and enough of a sense of right and wrong to overcome the urge to cheat.
In paragraph 5, the word “unfortunately” attract me, I try to understand what thing is unfortunately. From the context, I am sure it means children should be education at home. Different people have different ideas about this problem. They say that too many parents are abdicating that responsibility. I do not think I agree with them. In my opinion, they shirk their responsibilities; the students spend much time in the school. However, with cheating, parents hold different opinion. To them, shoplifting is dishonest; writing a couple of math formulas on their hand is not. They are grossly mistaken. Quite a few parents even believe that if they make much money and send children to the best school to receive education. They work hard and hard that spend lots of energy on work. There are more and more misunderstanding between parents and Children. Both of them are so busy their work and study that they do not spare enough time to exchange ideas. It does not benefit of children healthy.
From reading the paragraph 6,I have (去掉)doubt about why parents get outraged when A child cheats on an exam? It is its utterly unfair for children. I think Children (children)cheat on an exam as parents cheat on expense accounts or income taxes. The author says that the inconsistency drives children crazy. I think not children even parents are crazy too, because they try to educate children not to cheat and at the same time they cheat. I wish the parents do not continue the wrong action.
