Monash Malaysia gears up for move to new campus
Next year will be a momentous one forMonash UniversityMalaysia, as it will move into its new purpose-built campus.
Estimated to cost about RM170 million for the first stage of construction, the new campus is being developed in two phases over a land area of 12 acres, located across from the university抯 present facility in Bandar Sunway. The new campus will have a built up area of 73,000 square metres.
The first phase will see the construction of six buildings able to accommodate between 4,500 - 5,000 students and some 500 staff. In phase two, the university's capacity will be increased to between 8,000 to 10,000 students.
The buildings are designed around an oval-shaped three-storey library andlearning commonsequipped with facilities for student interaction and IT facilities. This area will be the heart of the campus.
The library will reflect the university's philosophy of "I am still learning" and will be the learning hub or intellectual centre of the university.
Disabled friendly elevated walkways will connect the buildings to each other.
Facilities at the new campus will include a sophisticated medical schoolequipped with digital learning equipment, clean rooms for medical research, a plant house that has a section for transgenic plants, laboratories for science and engineering disciplines, an auditorium, 11 lecture theatres that can each accommodate 120 to 350 students, and 19 tutorial rooms.
There will also be a postgraduate centre and a Professional Development Centre.
The new facilities will support current and new programs that are planned to be introduced by the university such as pharmacy, psychology, food science & technology, double degree in business & commerce and communication, and other postgraduate programs.
At the new campus, students will have access to 40 science labs which are actually used by the School of Science for the respective units like Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Physiology/Pharmacology, Applied Immunology and Pathology.
Another 75 science labs are just the supporting rooms and animal housing facilities such as the Wash/Dry room, autoclave, Specialized Instrument Rooms, animal cage, etc.
There will be 24 engineering labs, a networking and multimedia lab for the School of IT, and 12 computer labs for general use.
Students will continue to have access to a modern library and wireless connectivity on campus.
The campus will also be a pedestrian friendly place, as the car park will be located on a parcel of land adjacent to the campus.
Effort has also been put into the landscaping of the new campus, with an eye on ensuring that students learn in a 揼reen?environment. The well designed cafeteria, located close to the learning commons, has a section that opens into the landscaped gardens.
Monash staff will also have access to a staff centre, which will feature a lounge area, catering facilities and space to host small events.
The university抯 School of Medicine and Health Sciences will be the first unit to move into the new campus in January 2007. The remaining schools and administrative personnel are expected to shift into the new campus by June2007.
