Chinese super star
- Li Yuchun (Chris Lee)
Born in 1984, Li Yuchun (her English name is Chris Lee) is the most popular singer in China today. She is well known for her expensive shows and the high number of her fans.
On Aug 26, 2005, Yuchun, a junior student from music school, became the champion of Super Girl (the Chinese version of American idol) she won by 3.52 million votes via SMS. Before that, Chinese audiences hadn't seen such a good live Chinese singer for long time.
Few people know that, many years ago, she had already been a star in her middle school and had many fans. When she graduated from high school, she gave her first solo concert and trained her class mates, who had volunteered to be the dancers.
Yuchun is a mezzo-soprano, which is pretty rare in China. That's why many so-called experts say that she doesn’t have any singing talent. This prejudice is still rooted in many people's minds. She is very charming but in fact, her qualities are quite complex, which is far beyond the understanding of many people. They believed that she was just an overnight success and would be forgotten in no time. When they found out that she has been more and more successful over the last 3 years, they tried to explain the phenomenon: she is good looking and some of her fans include women who have been disappointed with men. Some even try to convince others that Li Yuchun and her fans are all lesbians!
The Super Girl 2005 drew attention from all over the world. Yuchun was selected as an Asian heroine and cover girl by Time Asia.
From September to December 2005, she participated in the concerts given by Super Girl winners and was the most important popular singer. During that period, she showed her incredible music talent and amazing commercial value. She could always immediately inspire the passion of the audience. More than half of the audience were there to see Yuchun and took the majority of the VIP tickets. This won her the ad deals with Coco-Cola, Crest, Swatch and many Chinese brands.
Yuchun has given 10 solo concerts since 2006.
The 1st was held on March 10, 2006, on her 22nd birthday, in her hometown Chengdu. It was an unplugged show called "Why Me" with an audience of only several hundred people. She chose and sang 18 songs to show her appreciation of the people who loved and helped her. The tickets were free. There were lot of people willing to pay thousands of RMB for one ticket but could not get one. So, to compensate this, her company released a DVD of the concert. Having seen the popularity amongst her fans of "Why Me", her company organized another unplugged concert on May 22, 2006 in Shanghai. This time, they sold the tickets. She sang 19 songs. Around 10,000 people watched this concert. They came from all parts of China, including Taiwan, HongKong, and some of them even flew over from Europe or America. In September 2006, Yuchun released her 1st Album "The queen and the dreams". It was one of the best selling albums in China in 2006. 431996 copies (unauthorized copies not included) were sold in the first month. A concert was held to introduce the album to the public in Beijing. It was in a small building with only 3,000 seats, which is too small for her fans. Getting tickets was extremely difficult for many people.
The 2nd "Why Me" concert was given in March 2007 in Beijing to celebrate her 23rd birthday. It was in the same small place, because most of the stadiums in Beijing were being renovated for the Olympic games. From this time, her company decided to hold a "Why Me" concert on her birthday every year, and gave her more freedom on it.
From October 27 to December 8, 2007, she gave 5 weekly solo concerts in 5 different cities for her 2nd Album "Mine" (ticket price from 180-1680RMB). None of them were in Beijing or Shanghai, but still full of audience and lot of fans from Beijing or Shanghai went to those cities to watch her show. Since it had not been decided at that time where to hold "Why Me 2008", fans from Shanghai took lots of flags and posters to her concerts, with "Why Me 2008 belongs to Shanghai" written on them and every time her fans could get close to Yuchun, they chanted this sentence to her.

These 5 concerts were very successful on both the music and commerce front, which greatly shocked the media in China. More and more people began to accept her and her songs and she was mentioned by Time again.
"Why Me 2008" was held in Shanghai on March 9 (ticket price from 180 to 1680RMB). Around 10,000 people watched it. She chose the songs; designed the procedures, the scene, and some of the outfits. In 2.5 hours, she sang 37 songs, and changed outfits 7 times, each one with a different style. The 10,000 strong audience sang "happy birthday to you" and all waved electrical candles. This was the first time they had ever done this and it was to show their devotion to her.
At this concert, the audience watched her latest MV "Weak Student", in which she was the actress, the lyric composer, and the director. It was the first time she had ever directed a MV and she did a good job.
Btw: her fans are called "corns", because in Mandarin "Yu's fans" sounds a lot like "corns". So if you travel to China, and hear somebody saying he or she is a corn, don't be surprised.

Le 26 août 2005, Yuchun, une étudiante en école de musique, a été sacrée championne de «Super Girl» (la version chinoise de la « star academy ») par 3.52 million votes par SMS. Avant cela, les spectateurs chinois n'avaient pas eu l'occasion de Voir de si bon chanteur (parmis les chanteurs chinois) depuis longtemps.
Peu de gens savent qu'elle était déjà une star et qu'elle avait beaucoup de fan dans son collège il y a longtemps. Aprés le bac, elle a donné le premier concert solo de sa vie, réalisant elle-même l'entrainement de camarades de classe bénévoles pour être danseur.
Yunchun est une mezzo-soprano, ce qui est assez rare en Chine. C'est pourquoi beaucoup de prétendus experts disent que son chant est horrible. Ce préjugé exerce une influence profonde encore aujourd'hui. En plus, elle est très charmante, mais ses qualities sont vraiment complexes, ce qui la rend trop difficile à comprendre pour bien des gens. Ils avaient cru qu'elle ne méritait pas ce succès, et qu'elle serait VITE oubliée. Mais comme ils ont vu qu'elle a eu de plus en plus de succès pendant les 3 dernières années, ils essaient d'expliquer le phénomène: elle est cool et ses fans sont quelqUES femmes très déçues par les hommes. Et certains essayent même de convaincre que Li Yuchun et ses fans sont toutes lesbiennes.
La « Super Girl» 2005 a attiré l'attention de tout le monde. Yuchun a été choisi comme héroïne asiatique et a fait la couverture de « Time »Asie.
De septembre à décembre 2005, elle a participé aux concerts donnés par les gagnants de « Super Girl » en en étant la chanteuse la plus importante. Au cours de cette période, elle a montré son talent musical incroyable et sa valeur commerciale étonnante. Elle peut toujours inspirer la passion de la totalité de son public. Yuchun a donné 10 concerts solo depuis 2006.
Le premier a été donné le 10 mars 2006, le jour de son 22me anniversaire, à chengdu, son bercail. C'était un concert unplugged intitulé « why me (pourquoi moi) ». Il n'y avait que quelques centaines de spectateurs. Elle a choisi et chanté 18 chansons pour montrer sa gratitude aux personnes qui l'aiment et qui l'ont aidé. Les billets ont été donnés gratuitement. Beaucoup de personnes auraient accepté de payer des milliers de RMB, mais n'ont néanmoins pas pu obtenir de billet. Ayant vu la grande passion de ses fans pour « why me », sa compagnie a organisé un autre concert unplugged le 22 mai 2006 à Shanghai. Cette fois, les billets étaient payants. Elle a chanté 19 chansons. Quelque 10,000 personnes ont regardé ce concert. Ils sont venus de toutes les parties de la Chine, y compris Taiwan et Hongkong. En septembre 2006, Yuchun a publié son premier CD « La Reine et les rêves » . 431996 copies (non compris les copies illicites) ont été vendu dans le premier mois. Un concert a été organisé à Pékin pour présenter les chansons au public. Il était dans un petit bâtiment de seulement 3000 places, qui était trop limité pour ses fans. La chasse aux billets a donc été un grand problème pour beaucoup de gens.
Le deuxième concert « why me » a été donné en mars 2007 à Pékin pour fêter sa naissance. Il était dans le même petit immeuble, parce que tous les stadium étaient rénovés pour les Jeux Olympiques. Dès lors, sa compagnie a décidé de tenir un concert « why me » chaque année, pour son anniversaire, et de lui donner une plus grande liberté.
Du 27 octobre au 8 décembre 2007, une fois par semaine, elle a donné 5 concerts solos (avec des prix de billet variant de 180 à 1680 RMB) dans 5 villes pour son 2me CD « les Miens » . Aucun d'entre eux n'était à Pékin ou à Shanghai, mais ces concerts étaient toujours pleins de spectateurs, et beaucoup de fans de Pékin ou Shanghai sont allés dans ces villes pour la voir chanter. Comme il n'a pas été décidé à ce moment-là où d'organiser le « why me 2008 », les fans de Shanghai ont pendu beaucoup de drapeaux et d'affiches à ses concerts, sur lesquels ont été écrits, « why me 2008, à Shanghai !». Ils ont répété cette phrase à chaque fois qu'ils pouvaient se rapprocher d'elle. A la fin, ils ont réussis!

Ces 5 concerts ont eu beaucoup de succès à la fois sur la musique et commercialement, ce qui a beaucoup choqué les medias chinois. De plus en plus de gens ont commencé à l'accepter ainsi que ses chansons. Elle a été encore citée par « Time » .
« Why Me 2008 » a été donné à Shanghai le 9 mars (avec des prix de billet variant de 180 à 1680 RMB). 10,000 personnes l'ont vu. Elle a choisi les chansons, conçu les procédures, les lieux, et quelques robes. En 2.5 heures, elle a chanté 37 chansons et a change 7 robes de différents styles. Les 10,000 spectateurs ont chanté ensemble « joyeux annviersaire » et brandi des bougies électriques. Ils ne se sont pas entrainés pour ça. Ils l'ont juste fait parce qu'ils l'aiment tous.
Pendant le concert, Les spectateurs ont vu son dernier MV « mauvaise étudiante » , dont elle est l'actrice, la parolière, et la réalisatrice. C'était la première fois où elle a contrôlé le tournage de MV, et elle a bien fait son travail.
PS: ses fans sont appelés « maïs », car en mandarin « les fans de Yu » se prononce un peu comme « maïs » . Donc, si vous voyagez en Chine, et entendez quelqu'un dire qu'il est un maïs, ne soyez pas surpris
