《致命弱點》全書26萬字，分為“毒品驚魂”，“上帝的手術刀”，“華盛頓的老同學”“你以為你是誰”“打入FBI”，“CIA間諜學校”，“色情間諜”，“目標──北京奧運會”，“雙面間諜”等26章。主要敘述楊文峰大學畢業後分配在國安部工作，後來下海到廣東，他遇到一系列不尋常的事：在上海國家安全局、廣東省政府辦公廳和酒泉飛彈發射基地的老同學接二連三地因泄密和間諜罪被國家安全機關收審，他自己也被廣東省公安局帶走。在前上司、國家安全部情報局周局長的協助下，楊認識到美國CIA利用這些老同學貪財好色等致命弱點對華開展情報滲透活動。為了保護老同學，為了洗刷自己和情人的冤屈，楊文峰抓住對方情報機關的致命弱點，與同伴深入虎穴，鬥智鬥勇。然而，掌握中美情報機關致命弱點的不只是楊文峰一人。當一個別有用心的雙面間諜利用中國國家安全部和中央情報局的致命弱點達到自己目的，圖謀將2008年北京奧運會變成中華民族的恥辱，將中美推向全面對抗，全世界封鎖中國。
《致命弱點》圍繞人性的“致命弱點”和中美間諜鬥爭這兩條線索，構築了一個驚心動魄的間諜鬥智和恐怖破壞北京奧運的故事。小說從獨特的角度展現中國社會各種怪現狀，從“人造美女”到“色情間諜”，從貪污腐敗到包二奶，從網路虛擬到雙面間諜，從中國農民到特權官僚，從國家安全部到中央情報局，小說都有精彩的另類描寫，並揭示這些社會現象與間諜和反間諜這條看不見的戰線之間的聯繫。
《致命弱點》對中美間諜機構以及這些機構的運作方式作了詳細的披露和探討。小說對於中美情治單位的差異，間諜機構對情報的分析處理，情治單位和政府決策的關係等等都做了深入的描寫，這些都成為小說破案的必不可少的材料.
兩條主線
美國中央情報局的王牌間諜從中國大陸越獄成功到達美國，帶來了北京已經部署完畢“致命武器”，即將“統一台灣”的情報。讓白宮驚慌的是，北京的“致命武器”讓美國根本沒有插手台海戰爭的藉口和餘地，而更讓白宮震驚的卻是台灣當局早就掌握了北京的“致命武器”計畫，而且也針鋒相對地部署了“決戰境外”計畫……在白宮束手無策的時候，北京堅信：“致命武器”計畫一旦啟動，兩個星期內，台灣會“回到祖國的懷抱”；台北則深信不疑：國安局在大陸通過台商策劃部署了四年的“決戰境外”計畫一旦啟動，“一中”將不再存在，中國將四分五裂，台灣將真正成為主權獨立的國家……

中央情報局局長戈斯，白宮主人布希，台北陳水扁和北京國家安全部部長、情報局周玉書局長，傳奇人物楊文峰等都是這部小說里的主角，但真正的主角卻是中國的九億農民包括兩億農村進城的民工，在作者楊恆均眼裡，盲流不但是中國真正的“三個代表”，而且他們還是“宣傳隊、播種機和宣言書”。
小說對中國現實社會作了了鮮明的描寫和深刻的揭露，對台北當局“高舉民主大旗”分裂中國，對北京統治者“高舉民族大旗”維護自己的獨裁統治，對華盛頓用美國國家利益主導台海局勢，都有另類描寫和一針見血的分析。
儘管作者一再申明“故事情節純屬虛構”，然而對中國大陸社會具有深刻認識，對中美台三邊關係了解透徹的讀者卻心知肚明：《致命武器》政治間諜和台海大戰的故事情節絕不純粹是“虛構”，小說中寫的大部分內容已經發生了，而且就發生在我們身邊和眼皮子底下，有些正在發生，而那些讓人驚悸的、勢必置中華民族於萬劫不復的“虛構”情節，也許遲早會發生……

《致命追殺》是“致命”系列三部曲之終結篇。“致命”系列第一部《致命弱點》試圖描寫中美情治單位鬥智鬥勇，主角是間諜特務和中美情報機關；“致命”系列第二部則是試圖解說中國國家安全和弱勢群體之關係，主角是弱勢群體和兩岸統治者，這第三部《致命追殺》則是試圖描寫十三億中國人和一個人的關係和故事……
如果說《致命弱點》是些許記憶，《致命武器》是關於眼前，那么《致命追殺》則是對未來的一點點思考。
楊恆均試圖以《致命追殺》為這兩年創作的近百萬字的政治間諜小說劃一個句號，給喜歡這類題材的讀者一個交代。
