Thenames"Loyola"and"Marymount"havelongbeenassociatedwithCatholic
highereducationincountriesaroundtheglobe.SaintIgnatiusLoyola,
founderofTheSocietyOfJesus,sanctionedthefoundationofhisorder's
firstschoolin1548.TheReligiousoftheSacredHeartofMaryhave
conductededucationalinstitutionssincetheirestablishmentinFrancein
1849byFatherJeanGailhac.Thesetwotraditionsofeducationhavecome
togetherinLosAngelesasLoyolaMarymountUniversity.

ThepresentUniversityisthesuccessortothepioneerCatholiccollegeand
firstinstitutionofhigherlearninginSouthernCalifornia.In1865,the
VincentianFatherswerecommissionedbyBishopThaddeusAmatyBrusito
foundSt.Vincent'sCollegeforboysinLosAngeles.JohnAsmuthservedas
thefirstPresidentRector.ThecollegewasoriginallylocatedintheLugo
AdobeHouseatthesoutheastcornerofAlamedaStreetandLosAngeles
Street.Thebuildingwasoneoffewtwo-storycomplexesinthecityatthat
timeandhadbeendonatedbyVincenteLugo.Althoughthebuildingnolonger
stands,itsoriginalsiteisacrossAlamedaStreetfromthecurrentUnion
Station,onthePlazanearthesoutheastendofthecity'shistoricOlvera
Street.Aftertwoyears,theschoolmovedseveralblocksover.Thecampus
wassurroundedbyBroadway,6thStreet,HillStreet,and7thStreet.St.
Vincent'sCollegefoldedintotheSocietyofJesus'snewlyfoundedLos
AngelesCollegein1911astheysimultaneouslyopenedtheirhighschool
division(LoyolaHighSchool).RichardA.Gleeson,S.J.servedasthefirst
JesuitPresident.
RapidgrowthpromptedtheJesuitstoseekanewcampusonVeniceBoulevard
in1917;withthismove,thenameoftheschoolwaschangedbacktoSt.
Vincent'sCollege.In1918thenamewasonceagainchangedtoLoyolaCollege
ofLosAngeles.Graduateinstructionbeganin1920withthefoundationofa
separatelawschool(thoughinstructionattheundergradatelevelremained
allmale,womenwereadmittedtothelawschool).Thelawschoolwasthe
firstinLosAngelestoadmitJewishstudentsasatthetimeUSC'slaw
schooldidnot.Theschoolrelocatedunderthen-President,JosephA.
Sullivan,S.J.,tothepresentWestchestercampusin1929,andachieved
universitystatusin1930becomingLoyolaUniversityofLosAngeles.Loyola
LawSchooldidnotmovewiththerestoftheuniversity,butremainstothis
dayinalocationjustwestofdowntownLosAngeles.Thecurrentlawschool
campuswasdesignedbyFrankGehry.Theformationofagraduatedivision
occurredinJune1950,althoughthegraduateworkhadformedanintegral
partoftheTeacherEducationProgramduringtheprecedingtwoyears.Loyola
Universitycontinuedtobeanall-maleschooluntilitsmergerwith
MarymountCollegein1973.
Inseparate,thoughparalleldevelopments,theReligiousoftheSacredHeart
ofMarybeganteachinglocalyoungwomenin1923.In1933MarymountJunior
Collegeopenedasanall-women'sschoolintheWestwooddistrictofLos
Angeles.TheschoolbecameMarymountCollegeofLosAngeleswhenitstarted
awardingbachelor'sdegreesin1948,andmovedtothePalosVerdesPeninsula
in1960.
In1967RaymundeMcKay,R.S.H.M.,PresidentofMarymountCollegehad
extendedaninvitationtoMaryFelixMontgomery,C.S.J.,GeneralSuperiorof
theSistersofSt.JosephofOrange,tojoinintheiraffiliationwith
LoyolaUniversityofLosAngeles.In1968theReligiousoftheSacredHeart
ofMaryandtheSistersofSt.JosephofOrangepartneredinthegoverning
andstaffingofMarymountCollege‹itwasthenthatMarymountCollegemoved
totheWestchestercampusofLoyolaUniversityasanautonomousinstitution.
SimultaneouslySt.JosephCollegeofOrange,afouryearliberalarts
collegeforwomenreligioussponsoredbytheSistersofSaintJosephof
Orange,begananaffiliationwithMarymountCollege.Itbecameoneoftwo
branchcampusesofMarymountCollege.In1970St.JosephCollegeofOrange
wasrenamedMarymountCollegeofOrange.ItremainedoperatedbytheSisters
ofSt.JosephofOrangeandceasedtoofferundergraduatedegrees.College
courseswereofferedtomenandwomenduringthesummers.Bothcampusesof
MarymountCollegeremainedall-femaleuntilthe1973mergerwithLoyola
University.
In1970,theStudentGovernmentsofLoyolaUniversity(ASLU‹Associated
StudentsofLoyolaUniversity)andMarymountCollege(ASMC‹Associated
StudentsofMarymountCollege)joinedtoformtheAssociatedStudentsof
LoyolaandMarymount(ASLM).
Afterfiveyearsofsharingfacultiesandfacilities,LoyolaUniversityand
MarymountCollegemergedandformedLoyolaMarymountUniversityin1973.
Throughthisunion,theexpandeduniversitymaintainedthecentury-old
missionofCatholichighereducationinLosAngeles.Atthistime,ASLM
becameknownastheAssociatedStudentsofLoyolaMarymountUniversity
(ASLMU).
MarymountCollege'sfour-yearprogramsubsequentlyseparatedfromits
two-yearprogram.TheMarymounttwo-yearprogramremainedincorporatedasa
separateinstitutionandreceivedaccreditationassuchin1971.Marymount
College,PalosVerdescurrentlyoperatesinRanchoPalosVerdes,CA.
WiththemergerofLoyolaUniversityandMarymountCollegein1973,the
SistersofSt.JosephofOrangejoinedtheSocietyofJesusandthe
ReligiousoftheSacredHeartofMaryasoneofthesponsoringreligious
communitiesofLoyolaMarymountUniversity.MarymountCollegeofOrangewas
renamedtheOrangeCampusofLoyolaMarymountUniversity.TheOrangeCampus
offeredcontinuingeducationandsummercoursestomenandwomenthroughthe
1980s.
Inarticulatingavisionforthiscollegiateenterprise,theBoardof
Trusteesturnedtothehistoryofthefour-centuryoldJesuiteducational
philosophy,aswellastothehistoryandtraditionsoftheMarymountand
St.Joseph'sSisters.
Duringthesummer,theLMUcampusplayshosttoalargenumberofprecocious
children.ItistheprimaryWestCoastsitefortheCenterforTalented
YouthsummerprogramoperatedbyJohnsHopkinsUniversity.

LMUsitsatopabluffof150acres(0.61km2)intheWestchesterareaof
WestLosAngeleslocatedintheDelReyHills.Theoriginal99acreswere
donatedtotheuniversitybyHarryCulver.XavierHall,namedforSt.
FrancisXavier,S.J.,acompanionofSt.IgnatiusofLoyola,S.J.,andSt.
Robert'sHall,namedforSt.RobertBellarmine,S.J.,acardinalandDoctor
oftheChurch,werethefirsttwobuildingstobebuiltonthecurrent
WestchesterCampus.Followingtheircompletionin1929,XavierHallhoused
boththeJesuitFacultyandthestudentsatthetimewhileSt.Robert'sHall
servedastheacademicandadministrativebuilding.
SacredHeartChapelandtheRegentsBellTowerwerethenextnon-residential
structurestobebuiltonthecampus(1953-1955).TheMaloneStudentCenter,
namedforLorenzoM.Malone,S.J.,analumnusoftheuniversityandformer
DeanofStudentsandTreasureroftheUniversity,wascompletedin1958and
renovatedin1996.LMUnowhouses36academic,athletic,administrative,and
eventfacilitiesaswell12on-campusresidencehalls(dormitoryandsuite
models)andsixon-campusapartmentcomplexes.
Thecampusalsohousestwolargeopengrassareasnotreservedforathletic
play.BothAlumniMallandSunkenGardensprovidescenerytothecampusthat
isalreadyladenwithviewsoftheentireLosAngelesBasin,MarinadelRey,
PlayadelRey,andthePacificOcean.
Theuniversity'srecentacquisitionofUniversityHallhasbroughttothe
campusanewentranceaswellasmuchneededofficeandclassroomspace.
UniversityHallisafacilityuniquetoanyacademicinstitution[citation
needed],inthatitwasoriginallyconstructedforHughesAircraftastheir
worldheadquarters,andconvertedfromanexclusivelycorporatefacility,to
abuildingthrivingwithacademiclife.LoyolaMarymountUniversityacquired
the1,000,000-square-foot(93,000m2)buildinginJanuary2000from
Raytheon,whichboughtHughesAircraft.LMUcompletedtheinteriorremodel
ofapproximately250,000squarefeet(23,000m2)inApril2001.Thebuilding
itself,whichhousestheuniversity'sBellarmineCollegeofLiberalArts,is
constructedofsteelandconcrete,andisdividedintosevenseparate
structuresaboveground.UniversityHallhasover500,000squarefeet
(46,000m2)offloorspace,andcontainsover1,000parkingspacesin3
undergroundlevels.The70,000squarefeet(6,500m2)ofatriumspacehas,
andwillcontinuetobethevenueformanyLMUevents.
TheprincetonreviewhasrecentlyrankedLMUashavingthe7thmost

titledUniversityChaplain,thisofficebecameknownasCampusMinistryin
1973withastipulationthattheDirectorwouldbeaJesuit.By1986this
requirementwaswaivedwhenMargaret("Peg")MaryDolan,R.S.H.M.becamethe
Director.In2008,aspartoftheuniversity's$380CentennialCapital
Campaign,itwasannouncedthata$5-millionfundraisinggoalwassetto
endowtheofficeasthePegDolan,RSHMCampusMinistryCenterinhonorof
Dolan'scontributionstotheuniversity.Dolan,analumnaofMarymount
College'sclassof1958,receivedherMaster'sfromLMUin1974andhas
servedtheuniversityasahousingdirector,campusminister,alumni
chaplain,directorofcampusministry,directorofalumnirelations,and
residentchaplainsince1973.In2008theuniversityaskedhertoaddress
theclassof2008attheundergraduatecommencementexercisesandshewas

AthleticteamsatLoyolaMarymountareknownasLions;theschool'sprimary
athleticaffiliationiswiththeWestCoastConference.WhileLMUhashad
successinseveralsports,itisprobablybestrememberedforitsmen's
basketballteamsbetween1985and1990,withPaulWestheadascoach.Tothis
day,LMUgamesoccupythetopfivespotsinthelistofhighest-scoringNCAA
DivisionIbasketballgames.
Especiallywell-rememberedwasthe1990team,ledbyHankGathersandBo
KimbleuntiltragedystruckintheWCCtournament.Gatherscollapsedduring
agameanddiedduetoapreviouslydiagnosedheartcondition.Playingfor

In2005,thepaperwontheColumbiaScholasticPressAssociationawardfor

onOct30."TheTower"tookfirstplaceinthe"Yearbook300-Plus"category
amongotherprestigiouscollegesfromaroundthenation.The2006yearbook
washonoredforitsuniquedesignandits"re:2006"theme.Directorof
StudentMedia,TomNelson,said"EditorinChiefAshleeGoodwinandthe
entireTowerstaffputanincredibleamountofeffortintothe2006
yearbook,whichwasnotonlythebestbutthelargesteverproducedat
LoyolaMarymountUniversity."

TheuniversityboastsbothanAM/closedcircuitandFMradiostation.KXLU
hasanannualfundraisingdriveknownas"fundrazor"whichsupportsthe
station'songoingoperation.ThestationhasalargefollowingintheLos
Angelesarea.Avarietyof"indie"andinternationalmusicaswellasrock
andjazzareplayed.
KXLUisalsothe'flagship'stationforLMUathleticsfeaturingeveryLions
Men'sbasketballgameeachseason.KLMUistheotherradiostationonLMU's
campus,whichcanalsobestreamedonlineforlistenersacrossthecountry.
KLMUoffersundergraduatesanopportunitytohosttheirownradioshows.

ROARNetworkistheneweststudentmediaon-campus.Itprovidesaforumfor
studentproducedprogrammingtobebroadcastbothviatheon-campuscableTV
systemand,eventually,viathelocalcableaccesssystem(s).ROARNetwork
istheonlyTVStationmadefor,andrunbystudentsontheLMUcampus.The
stationprovidesstudentproducedprogrammingeverytwoweeks,withits
primetimeblockfrom10:00p.m.to2:00a.m.everynight.Currentand

DedicatedtofosteringtheJesuitprinciplesoftheserviceoffaithand
promotionofjustice,CSAofferstudentsopportunitiestoservethecampus
andsurroundingcommunities.ThemissionofCSAistoeducateandformmen
andwomenwithandforothers,especiallywithandforthedisadvantagedand
theoppressed.
TheCenterforServiceandActionresultedinLMUbeingawardedthe
President'sHigherEducationCommunityServiceHonorRollwithDistinction,
thehighestfederalrecognitionaschoolcanreceiveforcivilservice.[6]
OneofthemanyopportunitiesprovidedbyCSAtostudentslookingtodo
serviceworkistheAlternativeBreakProgram.LMU'sAlternativeBreaks
programpromotesserviceandculturalexchangeonthelocal,national,and
internationallevelthroughhands-on,community-basedlearning.Studentsare
immersedindiversecontextsthroughouttheworldwithconcretechallenges
thatheightensocialawareness.

CSAalsooverseesLMU'sstudentserviceorganizations.Thesevenservice
organizationsworktohelptheuniversityandsurroundingcommunityofLos
Angeles.
EachServiceOrganizationhasitsownuniquemission,history,charismand
organizationalstructure.Themembersoftheseorganizationsmakethemselves
availableforon-campusserviceaswellason-goingcommitmentstoserveat
specificnon-profitagenciesinSouthernCalifornia.Eachorganizationhasa
moderatorandachaplain(thoughinsomeoftheorganizationsthesame
priestorwomanreligiousservesasbothmoderatorandchaplain).
TheCenterforServiceandActionworkswiththeserviceorganizationsin
fosteringon-campusserviceandcommunityserviceaswellasreflectingupon
theirexperienceofservice.CSAcoordinatescommunicationbetweenthe
leadershipoftheseorganizations,theServiceOrganizationCouncil.CSA
alsocoordinatesthedistributionoftheOn-CampusServiceRequests.
