小傳
威廉·麥克尼爾，1917年10月31日生於加拿大溫哥華，其父是教育家、神學家John T. McNeill。
他就讀美國芝加哥大學，1938年獲得學士學位Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) ，次年獲得碩士學位Master of Arts (M.A.) 。1947年，在康奈爾大學獲得博士學位PhD.。之後，一直在芝加哥大學任教。
他最受歡迎的著作，是早期作品《西方的興起》（The Rise of the West: A History of the Human Community ）(University of Chicago Press, 1963)。此書以不同文明之間的相互影響為主線來書寫世界史，尤其強調了西方文明在最近五百年里對其他地方的衝擊。此書的觀念對歷史研究有很大影響，由此，歷史學家開始更加重視文化的融合。
在其漫長的學術生涯中，麥克尼爾發表了許多種產生深遠影響的經典作品，其中包括《世界史》、《瘟疫與人》、《權力競逐》等。曾獲美國國家圖書大獎，伊拉斯謨獎，國家人文勛章等各類獎項。
2006年，麥克尼爾從芝加哥大學退休，現定居加拿大。
最新作品是與其子約翰·麥克尼爾合著的《人類之網》（中譯本，北京大學出版社，2011），對世界史提出了一種全新的解讀思路。

時至21世紀，《新全球史》的作者、夏威夷大學的傑里·本特利教授仍然這樣評價：世界歷史的真正開始書寫，除了韋爾斯那一類通俗作品之外，專業歷史學家只是在1960年代以後才開始留心這項研究工作，吃螃蟹的人有馬歇爾·霍奇森、斯塔夫里阿諾斯，而關鍵的奠基人是威廉·麥克尼爾。
2010年2月，美國總統歐巴馬在白宮為威廉·麥克尼爾頒發國家人文勳章，以表彰其在文史研究方面做出的卓越貢獻。
