TheambitiousandpatrioticideaoftheVarnacitizensGerchoGERCHEV,IvanKAMBUROV,VasilSTAVREV,NaydenNAYDENOVandYordanTODOROVcametrue.ItwasheartilysupportedbythecomposersDobriHRISTOV,PanchoVLADIGEROV,maestroGeorgiATANASOV…ProbablyallthosepeopleandmanyothernotableBulgarians,whohadcontributedtothebirthofVarnaMusicCelebrations,neverrealizedtheimportanceoftheirmission,initiatedinthatJulyeveningbythesea-side.
ButmoreimportantforVarnaandBulgariaisthatthespace,conqueredbythemusic,hasbeenkeptbyfuturegenerations.Somethingmore–overcomingthecataclysmsofwar,ofsocialandpoliticalchanges,theVarnacelebrationshavewontheprestigeandfameofanINTERNATIONALMUSICFESTIVAL,whose80thanniversarywecelebratenow!
LetushonourthefoundersoftheINTERNATIONALMUSICFESTIVAL,WHICHNAMEISASSOCIATEDWITH…THESUN!Becauseisn’tthesunthefirstpictureoftheVarnasummer,emerginginyourmind?Letushonourthemfortheirwisdomandsagacity,fortheirpatriotismandhistoricalmassage,theybequeathedtous.Forthemusic.
Atmomentslikethisoneourmemory,somehownaturally,triestoemphasize,torevive,torecollectthemostimportantofthepast.Andiftoday,in2006,thehistoricalbeginningofthis80-yearoldmusicfeastlooksalittlebitpathetic,alittlebitsentimentalandnostalgic,thefutureofthisfestival,Europeanbybirth,isquitesunny.Itisacertainty.SincethespiritoftheVARNASUMMERisstillaliveandtheMUSICiseternal.

TheVarnaSummerInternationalMusicFestivalistheoldestmusicfestivalinBulgariaandoneofthefestivalswiththelongesttraditioninEurope.ItisheldeveryyearinJune-July.
ThefestivalhaswonnationalandinternationalrecognitionandtodayitisanimportantandprestigiousforumofBulgarianandworldmusicandperformingartinthefieldofclassicalmusic.TherichandvariedprogrammeisavisitingcardofVarnaasacenterofinternationalculturaltourism.Thediversityofgenresfeaturesopera,symphonyconcerts,chamberandchoralmusic,cycles"EarlyMusic"and"YoungTalents",InternationalSummerAcademy,SummerScientificMeetings.
Duringits80-yearexistencetheFestivalhasachievednationalandinternationalrecognition.IthascontributedgreatlyforthepromotionofBulgarianmusicalcomposingandperformingart.Thesloganofthefounders"tobringtogetherthegreatestmusicauthoritiesinthecountry"hasfounditsfollowersinthepromotionofBulgarianmusicalarttoday.AgreatnumberofBulgarianmusicpieceshavebeenfirstperformedatVarnaSummer.
