早年經歷
出生於加拿大亞爾巴州的埃蒙頓地方。他讀的大學計有亞爾巴大學，多倫多大學，獲得法律、心理學、文學的學位。他在CBS廣播台做現場轉播時，對演藝很感興趣。
演藝經歷
1954年移到CBS電視，導演《Play House 90》、《希區考克劇場》、《Gun Smoke》、《Route 66》等電視片，在電視界紅極一時。
1957年導演第一部劇情長片《The Careless Years 》，但拍畢又回到電視界。後來經狄斯耐的慫恿，再回到影壇為狄斯耐導演《Miracle of the White Stallions》，他多才多藝，什麼形式的作品都拍得不馬虎，那部《愛的故事》到處轟動。
1971年的《醫生故事》示出了他的另一面的藝術良心。
