創作背景
光看歌名標題《向敘利亞進發》就知道這首歌要傳達的意思在哪，靈感來自於的是拿破崙第一帝國的軍隊遠征埃及時情形，是對江湖遊俠與十字軍東征的浪漫憧憬描述。此歌曲流行於拿破崙第一帝國時期，在拿破崙三世時期《向敘利亞進發》成為第二帝國的非正式國歌后，原共和國國歌《馬賽曲》被帝國政府嚴格要求禁止傳唱。
本曲創作於1807年，是由；奧坦絲·德·博阿爾內（Hortense de Beauharnais，1783-1837）譜曲，亞歷山大·德·拉沃爾德（Alexandre de Laborde，1773-1842）作詞。
博阿爾內是拿破崙三世的母親，荷蘭國王路易波拿巴的妻子，前荷蘭王后。
拉沃爾德出生自西班牙銀行家族，從小家境富裕，因法國大革命的影響自小避居於奧地利，成年後加入奧地利帝國軍隊成為一名中階軍官，返回法國後在帝國參謀本部任職，任職期間以其專業的知識培養出眾多的人才。因其出色流利的德語以及奧地利經歷讓他擔任了拿破崙帝國的國務卿職務。雖然拉波爾德歷練非凡，且多才多藝，集軍人、政治家與作家身分於一身，但他本人不善於理財，常有財務上調度不良的困擾窘境。不過這不影響拉波爾德的文學寫作，是法國浪漫派作家之一，著作甚多。
