unit2 12~16

When I read paragraphs 12-16,some problems puzzled me.

Firstly,“sometimes showoffs ask for cheers to which they are not entitled.” I wondered it is [is it]“ask for” or “ask to”. I discussed with my friends. Then one told me it is “ask for”, the prep “to” be belonged [belongs]to a fixed phrase “be entitled to”. It means giving someone the official right to do or have something. And secondly, the paragraph 14 only has one sentence; I’m bewildered although I read it fluently. What is the meaning of “now”, and what does “that” mean? It feels [seems]abstract in the whole meaning. I repeat and guess “now”----the author used in order to emphasize tone. Meanwhile, “that” stands for the last sentence of para.13

“Some folks achieve great things and nonetheless do not show off about it.”

Then author narrates a story that a quiet mother who has recently been elected to the state sentence never even mentioned her triumph. So the author uses “admiration, astonishment, awe” to praise her. But Felix ---my classmate---pointed out it is a great showoff, because maybe we have known her success before talking intimately. Not showing off about it is the just technique for showoffs. I don’t agree with him. I still remembered in para.7. The writer expresses her own opinion----Indeed everyone, has some sort of need to show off. No one’s completely immune. Not you. And not I. If the woman has self-restraint to [of]avoiding showing off her success, I think it is worth praising her.
