unit 4~5

When I read para.4~5, I have a strong feeling that employees expect high respect for individual ambition. The author uses an array of “they want to” to emphasis the workers’ high responsibility and respect for value. The employees find satisfaction in the contemplation of the perfection of their work, not the[去掉] only money they receive, because they also want to know how their contribution fit into the corporate strategy.

In para.4, I pay attention to the third sentence---they want to know not only how……but how……. The sentence is too long to understand in first reading time as the verb “know” has two clauses and the useful phrase “not only….but (also)….”. besides, I learn another important phrase---make an impact on (upon).

After perusing para.5, I realize that the quality and efforts of its work are two major factors to the profitability of a company. Then the author narrates Compaq Company for example. During the reading process, I’m puzzled by two words “turnover” and “push”. I look them[+up] in dictionary and some reference books. Then I know here “turnover” means the rate at which workers are replaced, especially in a given period, and “push” stands for the pressure of circumstances, etc. The last sentence---Compaq benefits from….to the best of their potential…for their achievements---attracts me. I’m bothered by “benefit”. Obviously, here “benefit” is a verb, the Longman Dictionary tell me that we can use “benefit from/by” in writing. And the phrase “to the best of one’s potential” means as for as one can.
