創作背景
這首歌以龐貝城的覆沒和發現為靈感，暗喻自己也像龐貝那樣有著隱藏的才華未被挖掘。龐貝（Pompeii）是位於義大利那波利灣岸邊的一座古城，古羅馬城市之一。龐貝歷史悠久，公元前79年8月24日時維蘇威火山噴發的一瞬間被火山灰埋在了地下，卻因此而保留了大量古羅馬帝國的建築遺蹟和藝術文物，成為世界上最為著名的古城遺址。 在龐貝出土的一幅壁畫中寫到“沒有任何東西可以永恆”，可突如其來的災難在毀滅了龐貝的同時也使得當時的古城風貌得以永生——能容納近2萬人的競技場、100多家酒吧、30多家麵包甜品店、可容納5千人的大劇院、鋪著整塊大石板的步行街、雕花石砌的水池和精美的壁畫……這一切都因為一場災難而躲過了歲月的侵襲，正如偉大的詩人歌德所說“在世界上發生的諸多災難中，還從未有過任何災難像龐貝一樣，它帶給後人的是如此巨大的愉悅。”
