Defying Gravity是美國2003年首演，後登上百老匯舞台的托尼獎獲獎音樂劇《女巫前傳》（Wicked）中的“西方壞女巫”Elphaba的著名唱段，表達了她不畏強權，追求自己的理想的志向，已成為音樂劇史上的經典唱段，在多個場合被眾多歌手翻唱。

2004年的托尼獎頒獎現場，音樂劇《Wicked》（女巫前傳）的兩位原班主演Idina Menzal（飾演Elphaba）和Kristin Chenoweth（飾演Glinda）再次聯手合唱了這首經典之作。

2008年，Elphaba的扮演者之一Kerry Ellis在專輯Wicked in Rock中翻唱了這首歌的搖滾版本，廣受好評。

2009-2010美國福克斯（FOX）電視台熱播美劇《歡樂合唱團》（glee）第一季第九集（S1E9）中，由Rachel Berry （Lea Michele飾）與Kurt Hummel（Chris Colfer飾）斗唱時亦選擇這首歌。

2013年英國女歌手Kimberley Walsh（原英國少女組合girls aloud成員）發行的專輯《Centre Stage》中收錄了這首歌的翻唱版本。

2014年美國福克斯（FOX）電視台《歡樂合唱團》（Glee）第五季第十二集（百集慶典）中Rachel Berry（Lea Michele飾）與Mercedes Jones（Amber Riley飾）及Kurt Hummel（Chris Colfer）再次共同斗唱演繹了這首經典翻唱。
