6-7 unit3

ten ten ten

It is time to read Paragraph six and Paragraph seven of unit three. There are no grammar difficulties in reading these two paragraphs, so it is not so hard to understand the main content.

Paragraph six is talking(去掉talking) about today’s workers’ needs and the relationship between their needs and how companies can maintain a stable and motivated workforce. Paragraph seven refers that today’s workers expect to try different kinds of work and some companies have carried out this project.

In Paragraph six, there is a phrase “struggle to”. The ordinal(original) meaning of “struggle” is to fight with hands and arms. Here it means “to experience difficulty and make a very great effort in order to do something”, which says in the dictionary. Another phrase “sensitive to” in the sentence “companies must be sensitive to the personal needs of their employees” means “understanding what other people need, and being helpful and kind to them”. According to the article, the author wants to say that companies must understand what the employees’ needs and make some responses to their needs, so that the employees can maintain their motivation and have the willing to work for the company effectively.

In the first sentence of Paragraph seven, the word “ever-changing” puzzles me. What’s the meaning of it? I looked it up in the dictionary. It has a meaning of “always”. In my opinion, it is the appropriate meaning. “ever-changing” means be in a situation of changing constantly. In the middle of the paragraph, the word “ongoing” in the sentence “they also expect ongoing job training that…” is an adjective, which is explained in the dictionary that “continuing to exist or develop, or happened at the present moment”. So in the passage, the author wants to express that the workers expect to continue their job training or further education for their jobs. Stop here, we can see that people are not only satisfied with finding one job, but also want to try more works in their lives. They expect to expand their knowledge and experience. They are challenging themselves!

In the last two sentences, author cites an example of “land’s End Company”, in which it says the company encourages employees to try different jobs; they even can make official transfer. That’s great, because it offers the challenging people an opportunity to prove themselves.
