端電壓指電源正負兩極之間的電壓,又稱路端電壓或端壓。它等於電場力沿外電路把單位正電荷從電源正極移動到電源負極所作的功。即等於外電路上的電壓降。

當電源放電時(對外電路作功),它等於電源的電動勢減去電源內阻上的電壓降,即 (放電)。當電源充電時,它等於電源的電動勢與電源內阻上的電壓降之和,即 (充電)。蓄電池和新的乾電池內阻很小,,其端壓與電動勢近似相等。對有內阻電源,當外電路斷開時,,路端電壓在數值上才等於電源的電動勢,即。一般情況下,,兩者之差是。
電動勢與路端電壓
電動勢是對電源而言,它就是電源把單位正電荷從負極經電源內部移到正極時,非靜電力所做的功;電壓是針對一般電路中的兩個點而說的,即某段電路兩端的電壓,也就是電場力把單位正電荷從某點沿電路移到另一點時,所做的功。實際電路中:電源電動勢約等於電路的開路電壓;路端電壓是指電源外電路兩端的實際電壓,其又有開路端電壓(簡稱開路電壓)和閉路端電壓(簡稱端電壓)之分。電壓表不能直接測量電源的電動勢,而實際測量開路電壓時,電壓表的內阻不可能無窮大(未真正開路),所測結果存在一定誤差。

電源的電動勢 等於電源沒有接入電路時電源兩極間的電壓。路端電壓(簡稱端電壓)是外電路兩端的電壓,又叫做外電壓;路端電壓有開路端電壓和閉路端電壓之分,都用字母表示。

當外電阻 變成無窮大時(外電路斷開), 變為零; 。表明:外電路斷開時的路端電壓等於電源的電動勢。這時,將電壓表直接接在電源兩極上,測出來的路端電壓並不準確的等於電動勢。但由於電壓表的電阻很大,很小, 很小,所以 和 相差很小。如果要求不高,用這種方法測電動勢很方便。

從能量守恆角度分析,開路時 ,電池內部的化學能轉化為靜電場的靜電能,並形成一定的電勢差 ,這時的電勢差等於電源的電動勢,即開路時端電壓等於電動勢,若把開路時的端電壓記為開,則有 ;閉路時 ,由化學能轉化為靜電場的靜電能不僅形成一定的電勢差 (端電壓),還包括電流(非靜電力的作用)在電源內部的消耗,即 ,符合能量守恆定律。

簡而言之,電源電動勢描述非靜電力(電池內的化學能)做功的能力;路端電壓描述靜電力(電場能)在外電路做功的能力。當開路,(電流在電源內部的消耗為零)時,才有開路電壓等於電動勢。電壓表實際測量電源電動勢時,其內阻很大但不可能無窮大到開路,所測結果是端電壓而非電源電動勢,然而其值很接近電源電動勢。
