人物簡介
在耶魯大學讀書時，遇到第二次世界大戰爆發，應召入伍，服役空軍。退役後擔任夏季巡迴劇團的舞台經理，後又升為導演，1947年到1949年在哥倫比亞和南卡羅拉納城的劇場活動。1949年擔任NBC電視導演，製作不少電視片。1955年從影，導演改編電視片的《馬蒂》榮獲奧斯卡最佳影片、最佳導演、最佳男主角三項金像獎，奠定了一流導演的地位。後來又導演了《鴛鴦譜》、《白髮紅顏未了情》等傑作。到了60年代，他的藝術抱負終於抵不過現實的困擾，作品由新而俗，到《莫負今宵》等片推出，便令人有搖頭三嘆之感。
