| 成立於1837年的英國游泳協會，在19世紀組織了首次游泳比賽。在1896年雅典第1屆奧運會上，男子游泳被列為比賽項目(包括 100米、500米和1200米自由式)。在1908年倫敦第4屆奧運會上，成立了國際業餘游泳聯合會，並審定了當時的世界記錄，制定了國際游泳規則。在1912年的第5屆奧運會上，正式設立了女子比賽項目。游泳從1951年第1屆亞運會開始，就是正式的比賽項目。 |
