AsonehalfofthetwintowersinBasketCity-otherwiseknownasBologna,Italy-FortitudofuelsonethegreatrivalriesattheheartofEuropeanhoops.Fortitudo\sbasketballdivision,70yearsoldlastyear,sawitsteamsplayintheseconddivisionfor34yearsbeforefinallymakingittothefirstdivisionin1966.The1976-77seasonprovidedthenextmilestoneasFortitudoreachedthefinalsoftheKoracCup.Afteraseriesofhighsandlows,theteamreturnedtoItaly\sfirstdivisionforgoodin1992.Ayearlater,Fortitudo\sfortunesbegantosoar.ItreachedthefirstofthreeconsecutiveItalianLeaguefinalsin1996onlytofallshorttoMilan.Despitelosingintwosubsequentfinalsaswell,Fortitudofinallyhadthechancetounlockitstrophycasewhenitcapturedthe1998ItalianCup.Fortitudo\ssuccessininternationalcompetitionparalleledthatinItalyastheclubcamewithinonestepoftheEuroleagueFinalFourinconsecutiveseasons.Afterthreemissedopportunities,FortitudofinallyaddedtheelusiveItalianLeaguecrowntoitscollectionin1999-2000.Afterlosingthattitletocross-townrivalVirtusin2001,Fortitudowasdeterminedtoregaincontrolofthedomesticleaguein2001-2002.FortitudofoughtitswayintofirstplaceattheendoftheregularseasonbutfellintheItalianLeaguefinals.In2002-03Fortitudoonceagainreachedthefinalsdespitenothavinghomecourtadvantagethroughouttheplayoffs.Theclubcomesoffoneofitsmostsuccessfulseasonseverdespitethelackoftrophies,asFortitudoyetagainmadetheItalianLeaguefinals-foranamazingeighthtimeinthepastnineyears-,aswellastheEuroleaguefinalgame,whichtheteamlosttoMaccabiTelAvivafterafantasticEuroleagueseasonwhichincludedroadwinsinTelAvivandMoscow.Whiletheirtripstothedomesticfinalshaven\tprovidedtheresultsthattheclubwouldwishfor,thereisnodenyingthefightingcharacterandhighlevelthattheclubhasplayedatoverthepastdecade.Theclubisaimingashighaseverand,asitsrecenthistoryproves,canneverbecountedout.
