研究領域
中生代爬行動物（特別是恐龍、翼龍）及其地層的研究。
側重於大型蜥腳類恐龍的形態學，系統發育及小型獸腳類恐龍、翼龍類的系統演化的研究。
工作區域
遼西、冀北、河南省（豫西南地區-汝陽、欒川），雲南省楚雄地區、廣東省河源南雄、內蒙古、甘肅、山西大同地區、新疆及浙江省等。承擔國家自然基金項目，參加豫西南恐龍調查研究項目。
工作經歷
1989年6月30日-2000年7月：中國科學院古脊椎動物與古人類研究所低等動物研究室工作。在此期間除了親自到我國多數恐龍化石地點，比如河南汝陽、安徽巢湖及黃山地區、四川三峽地區、廣東河源地區、遼西及山西大同地區進行考察，並掌握第一手資料外，還參加過3次大規模的國際恐龍合作計畫，包括1990春的中國-加拿大恐龍合作計畫（工作地點為內蒙阿拉善地區，鄂托克旗；新疆的將軍廟地區等）；1992年-1993年的中日絲綢之路恐龍考察（主要為內蒙古及新疆的吐魯番盆地；負責原巴克龍的研究）；1995年-1998年的中日蒙戈壁恐龍考察（主要為內蒙古的圖克木地區，蘇宏圖及蒙古西部；負責翼龍化石的研究）。多次參加日本榺山的恐龍發掘工作（1996年，1997年，1999年）。
2004年至2006年在中國地質科學院地質研究所博士後期間，主要研究遼西地區的翼龍化石，多次到遼西翼龍化石點進行地質考察。對中國的翼龍類化石做了階段性總結，以第一作者合著了《中國的翼龍類化石》；協助河源市政府於2005年組織了國際恐龍學術研討會。
2006年、2008年夏天作為中方特邀代表參加韓蒙國際恐龍考察計畫-主要工作區域為蒙古國的南戈壁-納么蓋特盆地。
2007年12月，參加日本-泰國恐龍合作計畫，在泰國北部進行野外考察。
2009年8月，參加日本榺山恐龍發掘調查。
國際會議及其它學術交流情況：
2000年、2001年、2002年、2003年分別參加北美古脊椎動物學會年會。
2005年4月，組織廣東河源國際恐龍學術研討會，並作報告：中國南方的竊蛋龍化石。
2006年4月，特邀參加2006韓國慶南固城國際恐龍學術研討會，並作報告：遼西及其周邊地區翼龍系統發育初步分析。
2007年9月，參加在德國慕尼黑舉行的第2屆國際翼龍學術研討會，並作報告：中國翼龍類化石的系統研究。
2008年4：特邀參加2008日本福井國際恐龍學術研討會，並作報告：中國河南欒川恐龍動物群

外蒙古考察呂君昌研究員為首的研究小組發現了翼龍從原始到進步的演化的過渡類型-達爾文翼龍(Darwinopterus) 這一發現填補了由原始翼龍向進步翼龍演化的過渡類型的空白，該研究成果發表於10月14日在世界著名科技刊物英國倫敦《皇家學會會報，B輯：生物科學》(Proceedings of the Royal Society Series B)上。適年為英國博物學家、進化論奠基者達爾文(1809-1882)誕辰200周年和他的《物種起源》發表150周年，特命名為模組達爾文翼龍以紀念這兩大重要事件。
