概述
1991年到1994年，吳傳喜應邀赴美，先後在柏克利數學所、里海大學從事博士後研究和學術交流訪問。之後，他又一次面臨著人生選擇：是留在學術領先、待遇優厚的美國，還是回到相對落後的中國？吳傳喜回來了，他說：“如果大家都因為祖國條件不好而不回來，那祖國的條件什麼時候才能變好啊！”
每年3篇左右的論文在國內外學術刊物上發表，主持完成兩項國家自然科學基金項目，被美國《數學評論》雜誌特聘為評論員……近年來，吳傳喜在微分幾何學領域的研究令人矚目。而與此同時，他也不斷被委以重任。從普通教師到系主任助理、系副主任、校長助理、副校長，2000年1月，38歲的他被任命為湖北大學校長，成為當時中國最年輕的大學校長。幾度花開花落，幾度果壓枝頭，有著70多年歷史的湖大如今生機煥發：本科生由2000年的不足8000人增長到12000人，碩士點增加了一倍達到42個，博士點獲得歷史性突破，去年一次性拿到3個……
回顧成長路，吳傳喜感嘆：“人生的每一次的確很重要，我慶幸自己回到了祖國，回到了湖北！”
個人簡介
吳傳喜：1961年生於鄂州。理學博士，教授，博士生導師，國家有突出貢獻的中青年專家，享受國務院特殊津貼，1978年，吳傳喜考入湖大前身“武漢師範學院”。又是十年寒窗，1988年他在北京大學獲博士學位。這時，人生的第一個關口擺在了他的面前：去中科院數學所，留在北大，還是回到湖北大學？最終，吳傳喜選擇了後者，成為湖大數學系當時唯一的具有博士學歷的教師。理由很簡單：“她是母校，從感情上我無法拒絕。” 1997年、2003年兩次被評為全國優秀留學回國人員。2000年1月起擔任湖北大學校長至今。
