Thisisneitherapolemicalbooknoramanifestointheordinarysense.Ifitwantsto"manifest"anything,bymeansofessaysthatretainthestyleandcharacterofeachwriter,itisasharedsetofproblems.Theseproblemscenterontwoissuesthataffectliterarycriticismtoday.Oneisthesituationofcriticismitself,whatkindofmaturerfunctionitmayclaim——afunctionbeyondtheobviouslyacademicorpedagogical.Whileteaching,criticizing,andpresentingthegreattextsofourcultureareessentialtasks,toinsistontheimportanceof]iteratureshouldnotentailassigningtoliterarycriticismonlyaservicefunction.Criticismispartoftheworldofletters,andhasitsownmixedphilosophicalandliterary,reflectiveandfiguralstrength.Thesecondsharedproblemispreciselythatoftheimportance——orforce——ofliterature.Whatdoesthatforceconsistin,howdoesitshowitself？Canatheorybedevelopedthatisdescriptiveandexplanatoryenoughtoilluminateratherthanpesterworksofart？Therearemanywaysofdescribingtheforceofliterature.Thepriorityoflanguagetomeaningisonlyoneofthese,butitplaysacrucialroleintheseessays.Itexpresseswhatweallfeelaboutfigurativelanguage,itsexcessoveranyassignedmeaning,or,putmoregenerally,thestrengthofthesignifiervis-A-visasignified（the"meaning"）thattriestoencloseit.Deconstruction,asithascometobecalled,refusestoidentifytheforceofliteraturewithanyconceptofembodiedmeaningandshowshowdeeplysuchlogocentricorincarnationistperspectiveshaveinfluencedthewaywethinkaboutart.Weassumethat,bythemiracleofart.
