Thisisneitherapolemicalbooknoramanifestointheordinarysense.Ifitwantsto"manifest"anything,bymeansofessaysthatretainthestyleandcharacterofeachwriter,itisasharedsetofproblems.Theseproblemscenterontwoissuesthataffectliterarycriticismtoday.Oneisthesituationofcriticismitself,whatkindofmaturerfunctionitmayclaim——afunctionbeyondtheobviouslyacademicorpedagogical.Whileteaching,criticizing,andpresentingthegreattextsofourcultureareessentialtasks,toinsistontheimportanceof]iteratureshouldnotentailassigningtoliterarycriticismonlyaservicefunction.Criticismispartoftheworldofletters,andhasitsownmixedphilosophicalandliterary,reflectiveandfiguralstrength.Thesecondsharedproblemispreciselythatoftheimportance——orforce——ofliterature.Whatdoesthatforceconsistin,howdoesitshowitself?Canatheorybedevelopedthatisdescriptiveandexplanatoryenoughtoilluminateratherthanpesterworksofart?
Therearemanywaysofdescribingtheforceofliterature.Thepriorityoflanguagetomeaningisonlyoneofthese,butitplaysacrucialroleintheseessays.Itexpresseswhatweallfeelaboutfigurativelanguage,itsexcessoveranyassignedmeaning,or,putmoregenerally,thestrengthofthesignifiervis-A-visasignified(the"meaning")thattriestoencloseit.Deconstruction,asithascometobecalled,refusestoidentifytheforceofliteraturewithanyconceptofembodiedmeaningandshowshowdeeplysuchlogocentricorincarnationistperspectiveshaveinfluencedthewaywethinkaboutart.Weassumethat,bythemiracleofart.

Itisimpossibletosay,ineitherpassage,howthepolaritiesoflightanddarkarematchedwiththoseofwakingandsleep;theconfusionisthesameasinthepreviouslyquotedpassageonforgettingandremembering.Thelight,inthesecondpassage,issaidtobelikeadream,orlikesleepCtheghostofaforgottenformofsleep"),yetitshines,howeverdistantly,uponaconditionwhichisoneofawakening("thesaddayinwhichwewaketoweep");inthislight,tobeawakeistobeasifonewereasleep.Inthefirstpassage,itisexplicitlystatedthatsincethepoetperceivessoclearly,hecannotbeasleep,buttheclarityisthensaidtobelikethatofaveildrawnoveradarkeningsurface,adescriptionwhichnecessarilyconnotescoveringandhiding,eveniftheveilissaidtobe"oflight."Lightcoverslight,trancecoversslumberandcreatesconditionsofopticalconfusionthatresemblenothingasmuchastheexperienceoftryingtoreadTheTriumphofLife,asitsmeaningglimmers,hoversandwavers,butrefusestoyieldtheclarityitkeepsannouncing.Thisplayofveilingandunveilingis,ofcourse,altogethertantalizing.Forgettingisahighlyeroticexperience;itislikeglimmeringlightbecauseitcannotbedecidedwhetheritrevealsorhides;itislikedesirebecause,likethewolfpursuingthedeer,ftdoesviolencetowhatsustainsit;itislikeatranceoradreambecauseitisasleeptotheveryextentthatitisconsciousandawake,anddeadtotheextentthatitisalive.Thepassagethatconcernsusmakesthisknot,bywhichknowledge,oblivionanddesirehangsuspended,intoanarticulatedsequenceofeventsthatdemandsinterpretation.
