聖經記載
聖經最後一卷書的點題字眼——「啟示」，原文是Apokalupsis，清楚說明這卷書的獨特之處。這字的意思是揭露，英文apocalyptic(啟示文學)就是源於這個字。舊約中的但以理書、以西結書和撒迦利亞書，同屬於這類文體，而新約則只有啟示錄。啟示文學運用象徵、表象以及其它文學手法，來表達對將來的種種預見。
啟示錄不但預見將來萬物的結局，並神與羔羊最終的凱旋，還將聖經其餘六十五卷書連繫起來，收畫龍點睛之效。事實上，了解本書的最好方法，就是認識整本聖經！
書中的角色、象徵、事件、數字、顏色和其它等等，差不多全部都曾在聖經其它的書卷出現過。有論者稱本書為聖經的「列車總站」，這是恰當的，因為這正是各輛「列車」終點站。這些列車是什麼呢？就是由創世記和其它書卷開始的各個思想系列，例如救贖、以色列國度、外邦列國、教會、神子民的敵人撒但、敵基督和其它等等。
啟示錄(由四世紀開始，本書常被誤稱為「聖約翰的啟示」，但其實應該是「耶穌基督的啟示」(一1))，是整本聖經的高峰。本書告訴我們萬事萬物將有什麼結局。就算只是略讀本書，非信徒會發覺他正面對嚴厲的警告，必須悔改；而神的子民則會受鼓勵堅持到底！
