1958年8月4日，Ricky Nelson（瑞奇·尼爾森）的Poor Little Fool成為第一支奪得該榜單第一的歌曲。2011年2月26日，Lady Gaga的《Born This Way》成為第一千支奪得該榜單第一的歌曲。
目前在該榜單排名第一的是：由Lorde演唱的《Royals》(截止到2013.10.26已4連冠)。
已被人們熟知Hot 100榜單已經誕生15年了，負責跟蹤和排名在幾個領域中的最流行單曲，在20世紀40年代和50年代，流行單曲分別位三個重要的榜單：
1.Best Sellers in Stores
2.Most Played by Jockeys
3.Most Played in Jukeboxes
因為這是一份主要衡量流行歌曲在年輕一代的音樂聽眾中的流行度的榜單，當時許多電台多年拒絕將搖滾音樂加入他們的播放列表。儘管三個榜單依照它們的重要性正式地擁有平等的權重。在Hot 100榜單創建前，當許多榜單歷史學家引用一首歌的表演時，他們往往會把Best Sellers in Stores作為依照。Billboard最終創建了當時第四個音樂流行榜單，這榜單結合一首歌多方面的因素，如銷量、airplay等，並且基於一個給予銷量比電台播送量更多權重的得分系統。在這個星期結束時，即1955年11月12日，《Billboard》第一次出版榜單Top 100。The Best Sellers In Stores,，"Most Played by Jockeys“和"Most Played in Jukeboxes "這三個榜單同時繼續同時發布Top 100的榜單。隨著"Most Played in Jukeboxes "的衰落和電台整合越來越多的以搖滾為主導的音樂進入他們的播放列表，《Billboard》在1957年6月17日停止使用"Most Played in Jukeboxes“這個榜單。在1958年7月28日,在最後出版的"Most Played By Jockeys"和Top 100榜單中，Perez Pradoof的Patricia（InstrumentalVersion）登上了榜首。在1958年8月4日，Hot 100在《Billboard》上首次露面。雖然與Top 100一樣，Hot100將所有歌的在榜時間重置為1，但Hot 100迅速成為行業的標準榜單並且《Billboard》在1958年10月13日停止使用"Sellers In Stores"。 Billboard Hot 100 仍然是一首歌在美國受歡迎程度的標準。
