Johann Augustus Sutter （1803-1880）丹弗吉爾伯格（Dan Fogelberg）1951年8月13日出生在美國伊利諾斯州。自幼隨祖父修習鋼琴及滑音吉他等多種樂器。1971中斷了大學的美術專業，投身到加州的民歌界。至此開始了自己的演藝生涯。Dan Fogelberg，是美國歌壇最富浪漫氣質的詩人歌手。他的作品具有明朗和諧的旋律及溫柔纏綿的歌詞，使得Fogelberg的歌具備了一切使人喜愛的條件。 較為嚴格的講Dan Fogelderg並不是一位真正意義上的鄉村藝人。他的風格橫跨了鄉村、民謠和搖滾。但這首（Sutter's Mill）無論從體裁（敘事類）、配器（口琴、班卓、吉他、dobro、fiddle等）節奏和旋律上都是一首鄉村風格十足的歌曲。
創作背景
歌曲里的主人公：Johann Augustus Sutter （1803-1880），1803年2月15日出生在德國卡登，23歲時娶了一個富有寡婦的女兒為妻，經營著一家商店。可是他賺錢的本領遠沒有花錢的大，於是1834年5月13日為免因債台高築而面臨的牢獄之災，丟下老婆和5個孩子，從瑞士進入法國而後乘船到美國。在美國到處闖蕩，偽造了個軍銜變成“薩特上尉”。1839年7月1日他到了個小小的傳教站－－現在的舊金山前身，在加尼福利亞，他與印第安人和平相處，定居下來。1840年8月他加入墨西哥國籍，並成功遊說了墨西哥總督胡安阿爾瓦多，得到了兩百平方英里的處女地。8月中旬他在薩克拉門托河與美洲河交匯處落腳，開始建立要塞，並命名他的王國為新瑞士。1847年墨西哥戰敗，薩特一開始支持成立一個獨立的加利福尼亞共和國，但當美國軍隊一度控制了他的堡壘，他放棄了抵抗。北美的第一次大淘金熱於1848年發生在加利福尼亞薩克拉門托河附近薩特的磨坊。1847年——1848年冬天，J.A．薩特正在建造一鋸木廠，他的木匠J．馬歇爾（James.W.Marshall）於1月24日發現了黃金，訊息立即傳了出去。薩特與馬歇爾已同意成為合伙人，但不久即被幾千名尋求發財的人圍困住，他們搭上帳篷，為了黃金不顧環境如何。1849年，約有8萬名淘金人蜂擁來到加利福尼亞黃金礦區。1853年，到達的人數為25萬。與典型的形式相同，當絕大多數可開採的礦藏枯竭，有組織的資本和設備以更有效與更商業化的經營替代個體採金者時，淘金熱勢頭減弱。同時，無法無天、狂暴的淘金營地也讓位給由政府與執法部門管理的永久性拓居地。當黃金采盡，缺乏其他有生氣的經濟活動時，這些拓居地變成了被廢棄的鬼鎮。鼎盛時期，他占地近5萬多公頃、牛馬羊無數。慷慨大方、樂善好施，而在瑞士的老婆孩子卻掙扎在貧困線上。1855年，由於墨西哥戰敗，美國聯邦土地局起訴他，將其三分之二的土地沒收。北美的第一次大淘金成了薩特一生的轉折點－－它們毀了他，從此他和他的王國開始衰敗。1880年6月18日，他死在國會山附近的小旅館裡。6個月後他的妻子病故與其安葬在一起。
