簡介
自學英語《自學英語》是張道真教授在繼《電視英語》之後出版的一套基礎英語學習教材。其主要特點是從最基本的字母和語音知識開始，循序漸進地進行講解；教學內容簡單易懂，課文短小精悍，詞序編排合理，強調口語化，容易背誦。本冊包含1200多辭彙，學完後可以打下英語學習的初步基礎。
目前整套圖書包括四本，這套教材循序漸進，按不同學習水平和深度分為四冊。
作者
張道真教授 1947年畢業於南京大學(即中央大學)外語系。1948年春赴美留學，先就讀於華盛頓大學英國文學系，1949年轉往哈佛大學讀比較文學。1950年回響周總理號召回國參加建設，在北京外國語學院任教至1996年退休。後應邀赴深圳大學任校長顧問。1990年赴美，在美國定居，潛心於英語教學的改革研究，2000年冬返回深圳。主要著作有《實用英語語法》、 《現代英語用法詞典》、《常用英語動詞詞典》、《電視英語》、《初級電視英郡、《圖解兒童英漢詞典》、《初級英語詞典》，近期將出版《中級英語詞典》、《高級英語詞典》及《簡明英語語法》等。譯著有《包法利夫人》、《瘸腿魔鬼》、《鄉下佬》以及《十九世紀文學主流》等。
特點
這套書有下面主要特點：
1、課文短小精悍：一般一二十行，生詞約為十一二個。文字儘量口語化。要儘量做到大部分都能背下來。只有把課文背熟，生詞才能記住，語法也才能鞏固。要反覆背，定期複習，課文背得愈熟，基礎打得愈好。
2、內容反映現代生活，包括常用的現代辭彙，學了就能用，所學辭彙可表述現代生活的方方面面，強調語言材料的實用性。
3、注意口語練習：每課除有對話練習、句型練習、問答等之外，還有附錄中的口語練習。練習除了起複習鞏固的作用外，還可打好初步口語基礎，必要時可乾一些初級的口語工作。
4、配有錄音資料，便利學員自學，同時保證發展正確的語音、語調，為發展全面的語言能力打好基礎。錄音要反覆地跟，務使自己有正確的語音語調。
5、每課有詳細的輔導材料，包括課文譯文，課文注釋，語法講解，語音說明，練習答案，以利自學。
6、有豐富的附錄，主要包括練習及複習材料，各類讀物（包括兒歌、小詩，故事等）來發展閱讀能力，並鞏固所學內容。本書可說是精泛並舉。
這套教材是為英語自學者設計的，對職稱考試、就業應聘及其他英語學習者也有很強的普適性、針對性，同時對在校大中小學生及教師的英語學習或數學也具有參考價值。于于學習這套書要用多少時間可以因人而異。如果中學畢業生、在家待業，時間比較充裕，一年學完四本也是可能的。如中學英語沒基礎，這四本書可細水長流地學，學三四年也可以。

圖書分為四冊，各自的主要特點如下所示：

第二冊：也包含1200多辭彙和主要的語法項目，學完後可以看多種簡寫讀物。此時英語已接近中學畢業水平。
第三冊：也包含1200多新詞，主要語法項目都已學到，學完可以看淺易原著，相當於大學公共英語一年級水平。
第四冊：積累辭彙約為5000，加上讀物中出現的詞，可能有6000辭彙，接近公共英語二年級水平，能看多種知識性閱讀材料，經過一段熟悉過程，可以看所學專業材料。
