多年生, 被粉或無粉，無毛或被柔毛，稀被腺毛。冬芽具鱗片；鱗片宿存於葉叢基部或在開花前消失。葉基部楔形、圓形或心形，少數種類具兩型葉。花序傘形；花異型，極少同型；花萼鍾狀，至果期裂片開張。蒴果球形，近膜質，成熟時裂成不規則的碎片。
