作者巴爾塔沙·葛拉西安(1601一1658),一個滿懷入世熱忱的耶穌會教士,對人類的愚行深惡痛絕。但《智慧書--永恆的處世經典》全書極言人有臻於完美的可能,並雲只要佐以技巧,善必勝惡。在《智慧書--永恆的處世經典》中,完美並不靠宗教上的啟示(全書罕言上帝),而取決於人的資源與勤奮:警覺、自製、有自知之明及其餘明慎之道。

這本書談的是知人觀事、判斷、行動的策略--使人在這個世界上功成名就且臻於完美的策略。全書由三百則箴言警句構成,這些箴言警句滋味絕佳而不可不與友朋同事分享共賞,又鞭辟入裡而不能不蒙敵人對手於鼓裡。本書的理想讀者,是因日常事業而需與他人周旋應付者--他必須發現他人用心,贏得其好感與友誼,或反制其機謀及使他人意志一籌莫展。和所有警句一樣,本書的讀法是慢嚼細咽,且每次少許即可,以便體會箇中三昧。

歐洲有許多學者相信,千百年來,人類思想史上具有永恆價值的處世智慧包含於三大奇書:一是馬基雅維里的《君王論》,二是《孫子兵法》,三就是這本《智慧書》。德國大哲學家叔本華曾刻意將《智慧書》譯成德文,並盛讚此書"絕對的獨一無二"。尼采也讚揚此書在論述道德的奧妙方面,整個歐洲沒有一本書更精微、更曲折多姿。在1873年的一則札記里,尼采寫道:"葛拉西安的人生經驗顯示出今日無人能比的智慧與穎悟。"

作者簡介

巴爾塔沙·葛拉西安(Baltasar Gracian),17世紀西班牙哲學家、思想家、耶穌會教士。1601年出生於西班牙阿拉貢的貝爾蒙特村。1619年,進入耶穌會見習修行,此後歷任軍中神父、告解神父、宣教師、教授及行政人員等職。1637年,其處女作《英雄》(El heroe)問世,旋即引起轟動;1640年,討論領袖素質的《政治家》(El politico)出版;1643年,分析詩歌的《詩之才藝》(Agudeza y arte de ingenio)出版;1647年,巔峰之作《智慧書》(Oraculo)問世。

葛拉西安因其筆鋒犀利、譏諷政治,被耶穌會警告,未獲批准不得出版作品。1651年,寓言小說《批評家》(El ctitican)問世。為此,他被耶穌會解除了教席,放逐至一鄉下小鎮,直至1658年終老於此。

葛拉西安一生坎坷,他的思想卻對許多歐洲著名道德倫理學家以及德國17-18世紀的宮廷文學和19世紀的哲學產生了重要的影響。
