IsraelEpstein,bornin1915inPoland,wasbroughtupinChinaandtherebeganhisjour-nalisticwork,publishingalsointheUnitedStatesandothercountries.HisfirstassociationwithSoongChingLingwasin1938-45inthewartimeChinaDefenseLeagueinHongKongandChongqing(Chungking).In1951sheinvit-edhimandhiswife,thelateElsieFairfax-Cholmeley(1905-84),toreturnfromtheUnit-edStates,wheretheythenlived,tohelpsetupthemagazineshefoundedinBeijing,"ChinaReconstructs"(now"ChinaToday")ofwhich,atSoongChingLing'sdeathin1981,Epsteinwaseditor-in-chief,having,inthemeantime,be-comeacitizenofthePeople'sRepublic.
Fromthelate1970s,shehadaskedhimseveraltimestowriteherbiographyaftershedied.Followingretirementfromthemagazine,hespentseveralyearsinresearchingandwrit-ingthisbookwhichappearedonthecentenaryofSoongChingLing'sbirth.
