Today I read paragraph 1 to Paragraph 3, and it is certain that I don’t know some words. I looked them up in some dictionaries and references. Then I listed these words in a booklet. This is the first step---prepare for reading this part. After that, I read this passage very carefully. This part is very interesting, in that its topic is how to make work meaningful and it relates to my major.
I admire the author who uses some simple words to describe. In the second sentence of the first paragraph, I find two words---‘meaning’ and ‘balance’. The ‘meaning’ does not mean ‘what something represents or expresses’ but it means ‘the value’. I know what the meaning of the phrase ‘balance in their lives’, but I could not write so good phrase when I am writing. My attention is direct to the word ‘contribute’. I always read the phrase ‘contribute to’, so I expect to see ‘to’, but I haven’t find it before ‘and’. I easily think that the object of ‘contribute’ is ‘how their work is effective’. But it is hard to understand the sentence. I read some reference and look up in some dictionaries. fortunately I find out the answer. The verb can connect something directly or nothing. So this word hasn’t an object. In the last sentence of this paragraph, the phrase ‘act in’ draws my attention. In my opinion, it means that the organizations’ behaviors.
I want to explain why ‘make’ follows ‘help’ directly in the last sentence of Paragraph 2.The reason is that the preposition ‘to’ which follows the verb ‘help’ can be omitted. actually, it is ‘help to make’.
In the third paragraph, the author shows that the importance of the appropriate challenge. It gives me some ideas about how to manage the employees. The author uses the method ‘too …challenge’ to begin the condition. One word puzzles me. It is ‘lowered’. In my opinion, the word ‘lower’ is enough, and we needn’t to use ‘lowered’ instead of ‘lower’. I research for the answer from many books, but I haven’t found out the answer. I will ask my teacher.
I like this part. I find many beautiful sentences and strict grammar. It is worth learning.
