Today, I read the unit3 “attitudes toward work”. I am attracted by the title before reading. As we known, attitude is everything. If someone devotes himself body and soul to work, he/she may enjoy the job and regard it as one of the source of self-esteem and satisfaction in life.
Now, I begin to read the para.1 to 3. Immediately, the words of “authoritarian” and “dehumanizing” bewildered me. So I look them in dictionary,?“Authoritarian’’ means demanding total obedience and refusing to allow people freedom to act as they wish, “Dehumanizing” means to remove from a person the special human qualities of independent thought, feeling for other people. After solving the puzzles, I know that the main idea of para.1 tells us more and more people expect high respect for individuals and opportunities to expand their knowledge and experience. They also pay more attention to the social and environmental awareness of companies.
In the para.2, the author points out that companies design work can help make employees more effective and efficient. At the past, people think teamwork is the best way to make work more meaningful, but now and in the future, workers want to take responsibility and be rewarded appropriately. Hence they will contribute enthusiastic from time and time.
The sentence---too little challenge in the work, as in completely automated tasks---in para.3 stops me reading. I wonder what does the word “as” mean. I read it again and again, then I understand here “as” is used to introduce an example or further instance of something in order to help explain a particular point or idea. After reading this part of the essay, I know the mental challenge is closely related to job satisfaction and success or achievement in reaching an accepted standard of competence is an important factor in job satisfaction, neither too little challenge nor too much.
