Wring for unit 2

1—6

I got much new knowledge by reading one to six paragraphs in unit 2.

At the first line, there is a phrase “over at the far end of the living room.” I can’t understand it. After hard thinking, I found the meaning is “at the other side of the room.” The last sentence in the first paragraph has two points attracted me. One is “shift from” it let me know how to express the position the direction or the character’s change. The other one is “how very, very, very deeply”. The word “very” aims to show that the speaker is s skilled in exaggerating her feelings to show off her sympathy.

“Show off” in the second paragraph means display something to advantage, in order to make other people admire.

In paragraph 3, there are three difficult words “angst”, “Kierkegaard” and “epistemology”. The average person would not hear of Kierkegaard and would not know either of these terms, so the speaker is using them to show off his knowledge in philosophy. At the last line of paragraph 3, there is a phrase “perfectly good”. As we know, perfect means without fault or flaw, excellent and good means have the right qualities. From these, you can find their meaning is similar. But now, use perfectly to describe good, it could strengthen the mood and show that it’s very good.

The “us” in “there’s us” at the beginning of paragraph 5, refers to the author and her husband.

This section shows us various kinds of showing off by describing 5 examples. From them we can know what the author wanted to tell us.
