Whiskeytown

altern ger/son after

The alternative country quintet Whiskeytown emerged in the mid-'90s from the same North Carolina music scene best known for producing indie rock bands like Superchunk. The group was led by singer/songwriter Ryan Adams, who formed Whiskeytown after the break-up of his punk outfit the Patty Duke Syndrome. Showcasing Adams' acute songwriting and Gram Parsons-like twang, Angels, the band's four-song debut EP, bowed in 1995; Faithless Street, their full-length follow-up, surfaced later in the year. Upon signing to the Outpost label, Whiskeytown resurfaced in 1997 with Stranger's almanac. — Jason Ankeny
