Tim DeKay[一般指蒂姆·迪凱]迪凱從小喜歡田徑和藝術。在學校很活躍於打籃球和棒球，打棒球是他家的許多世代的傳統。在高中時參與的許多學校戲劇表演，至今還不時地談到他在高中時表演的戲劇《奧利弗》（Oliver）。高校畢業後，提姆就讀LeMoyne College大學時主修商業管理和哲學, 打棒球為課外活動。沒多久，他便決定以戲劇作為他主要的課外活動項目。在1985商業管理學士學位畢業後，他計畫在商業或法律方面的職業，但最終意識到，戲劇才是他真正要追求的職業。
他在羅格斯大學獲得碩士學位，遇到了他的妻子，女演員Elisa Taylor。提姆目前與他的妻子和他們的兩個孩子住在美國加利福尼亞。
