Plain White T’s的故事始於十年前，一個芝加哥郊區的少年Tom Higgenson來到了當地一家著名的搖滾俱樂部the Metro，並在舞台上看到了自己的未來。回到家以後，Tom立刻找來紙筆和吉他在一台簡陋的四軌錄音機上開始向夢想邁出第一步。Tom把自己的樣帶遞到了90年代混出名氣的Loud Lucy樂隊的主唱Christian Lane的手裡，Christian聽過樣帶以後回復Tom說：“如果你帶著吉他把自己鎖在房間裡一整年，你一定會成功。”儘管這支叫做Loud Lucy的樂隊在今天遠比不上Plain White T’s，這句話也大大鼓舞了當年的Tom。

在高中里，Tom和學校里其他的搖滾小子們組了一支又一支不同的流行和搖滾樂隊。然而，加入一支名叫Harvey’s Daughter的樂隊才真正改變了Tom的未來。在這支樂隊里，Tom認識了貝斯手Harvey’s Daughter。兩人一拍即合，隨即雙雙離隊另組新隊。Tom開始擔任主唱，並且開始寫歌。好友Dave Tirio作為鼓手加入進來。1997年秋天，流行朋克樂隊Plain White T’s正式成立。樂隊開始在芝加哥當地不斷演出，其中就包括當初的Metro俱樂部。1999年夏天，Tom遇上了一場車禍，腎和肺都嚴重受傷，差點丟掉了性命。大難不死的Tom對生活有了新的領悟，這也體現在了他的創作上，樂隊由於這場車禍展現出了全新的面貌。

2001年，樂隊自己發行了DIY專輯《Come on Over》，在這張唱片賣出了好幾千張以後，終於引起了唱片公司的注意。Fearless公司簽下了Plain White T’s，並在2002年為他們推出了全長專輯《Stop》。2005年年初，樂隊在經歷了人員變動和大規模巡演後推出了新專輯《All That We Needed》。也是在那個時候，樂隊陣容終於穩定下來：主唱依舊是Tom Higgenson，而Tirio和Tim Lopez擔任吉他，De'Mar Hamilton鼓手，Mike Retondo貝斯。

在這張專輯裡，出現了樂隊成績最好的一首單曲《Hey There Delilah》，這首單曲一改樂隊的基本風格而是十足的抒情民謠味道。2006年，樂隊特意為這首單曲推出同名EP，收錄了單曲的多個版本以及四首新歌和MV。

這首單曲在2007年夏天也終於登上Billboard Hot 100單曲榜的冠軍位置，成為Plain White T’s的第一支冠軍單曲。

隨著大熱單曲《Hey there Delilah》的走紅，讓我們認識了一隻並不算新，來自美國芝加哥的Emo-Punk樂隊Plain White T's，這支單曲曾在Billboard Hot 100單曲榜曾兩連冠軍榜首，講述了分隔兩地的愛情故事，女孩還在紐約讀書，男孩在異鄉打拚，儘管生活艱辛，但是他們彼此的信念堅定的故事。就是這首歌曲觸動了多少異地戀者，並讓他們對愛情又充滿了信心。

樂隊的走紅，也讓人越來越關注其下一張專輯，樂隊主唱兼詞曲作者Tom Higgenson表示：“我們是一支非常有野心的樂隊，不去考慮別人對我們新專輯看法，我們唯一要做的就是按照經典的路線去製作它”，他還說到“我們以前的歌曲受到來自五六十年代歌曲的結構的影響，這次我們要嘗試著改變一下，不僅僅是Punk歌曲，更要有摩登的東西在裡面，我們要做一張像The Beatles或Tom Petty那樣的唱片”但實際上，樂隊除了在服裝造型上以及樂器上才用的是1970年以前的復古的元素外，錄音上全是很現代的感覺，即使是聽上去某些地方的不完美，那也是經過現代技術打造的刻意的“不完美”。

新專輯《Big Bad World》咋聽上去就像Tom所說的Punk的元素少了，隨之而來感覺是他們越來越流行了，新專輯總共10首歌曲，每首歌要表達的內容都與新專輯名稱呼應。其中的《Serious Mistake》、《Rainy Day》相比其他歌曲就算是上乘之作了。
