Adyghe is a North West Caucasian language spoken by about 300,000 people mainly in the Russian republics of Adygea and Krasnodar. It is also spoken in Australia, Egypt, France, Germany,Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Macedonia, Netherlands, Syria, Turkey and the USA

Adyghe was written with the Arabic alphabet from 1918 to 1927. The Latin alphabet was used until 1938, and then the Cyrillic alphabet was adopted. The literary language is based on the Chemguy dialect.
