Thank you for the opportunity tocomment on your forthcoming book: English for Elite Police. I am particularlyimpressed by the way that you have chosen to teach advanced understanding of,and sensitivity to, use of the English language. The comparative nature of the content encourages the reader to not onlyunderstand complex language structure but also the nature of policing, which ofcourse is very relevant to the interests of your readership. The reader istherefore lured into improving his/her English comprehension and refined usagethrough his/her commitment to his/her area of work speciality. You cleverly usethe reader’s career focus and motivation as a basis for improving competence inthe English language.
The book is not heavily theoreticalalthough you obviously have a strong grounding in educationtheory by the way you have structured this very practical book.Education theory is also obvious in your preferred style of teaching. You makethe content interesting by the variety of teaching methods: role plays, casestudies, class discussions, multiple choice exercisesand activities, as well as taking time to explain technical terms andcolloquial language. Your use of occasional jokes and funny stories adds lightrelief to the concentration and hard work required of the reader, yet humouralso increases cultural and contextual understanding of the English language.
This book clearly aims at developingand testing sensitivity to the shades of meaning in Englishlanguage usage – a far cry from the old days of rote learningwhich may have produced knowledge of words and phrases but often resulted invery awkward or ambiguous sentence structure, making it difficult for English people to understand what the speaker or writerwas trying to communicate. You have been able to master the English languageand your book provides a very interesting way for police to develop the sameskills.
Congratulations on your effort and best wishesfor publication of the book.I hope itis adopted widely.
