《英語閱讀基礎教程1》內容簡介：長期以來，許多在高職高專英語專業教學第一線從事教學工作多年的教師常常感到迫切需要一套為他們量身定做的新教材以適應不斷發展的教學形勢的需要。正是基於這種需要，復旦大學出版社根據教育部頒發的《英語專業教學大綱》(基礎階段)組織、策劃了高職高專英語專業系列教材的編寫工作，以更好地服務於我國的高職高專英語專業教學。
《英語閱讀基礎教程》就是這一系列的一個組成部分，通過為學生提供系統的、富有時代氣息的和人文精神的閱讀材料，旨在培養和提高學生的閱讀和獨立思考能力，擴大學生的知識面和辭彙量，從而提升學生的理解和欣賞水平。
本教程在選材和編寫過程中，努力遵循如下原則：
1.內容新穎活潑，富有時代特色；
2.選材豐富多樣，貼近現實生活；
3.語言生動流暢，不失規範地道；
4.觀點鮮明獨特，注重啟迪心智；
5.練習靈活多樣，鼓勵活學活用。
全教程共四冊，每冊配有練習答案。每冊包含16個單元，每單元由同一主題的3篇文章組成，全書共48篇文章。每單元主要包括如下幾個部分：
1）每單元以Introduction引出本單元主題，讓學生對本單元的內容有個大致的了解，激發他們的閱讀興趣。
2）註解採用邊注形式，列出所有可能對閱讀理解造成困難的單詞和詞組以及它們的中文解釋，以方便閱讀，降低難度，增強學生的信心。
3）每單元的前兩篇文章可用於課堂教學，而第三篇可以作為課外補充閱讀。
4）篇章結構的練習是為了幫助學生對整篇文章結構的把握。
5）根據課文內容填空的練習目的是在學生熟悉課文內容的基礎上訓練他們的概括和表達能力，這是英語專業學生的基本功。
6）英譯漢練習通過列出課文中的難點，在培養他們的翻譯能力的同時，加深學生對文章的理解。
7）漢譯英練習的目的是在訓練翻譯能力的同時，鼓勵活學活用。
8）選詞填空練習旨在拓展學生的辭彙量。
9）討論題可採用互動方式用於課堂討論或辯論，或採用任務方式，讓學生髮表個人看法。
10）選擇題和判斷題用於考察學生的理解能力。
11）連線題經常出現在雅思等其他英語考試中，可用於考察學生的概括能力。
12）完型填空題的題型與新的大學英語四級考試一致。
13）改錯題用於考察學生的語法知識，是大學英語六級的題型之一。
