《研究生英語聽說教程(引進版)》就是一套以培養學生聽力策略和微技能為核心，在突出聽力策略和微技能培訓的同時，通過大量的練習培養學生說、寫能力的教材。《研究生英語聽說教程(引進版)》共兩冊。兩冊教材在第一章都首先通過各種練習介紹了微技能，使學生真正了解它們在提高聽的能力方面的意義和作用。第一冊圍繞7項微技能進行訓練。第二冊除螺旋式地進一步進行7項微技能訓練外，還增加了兩項難度較高的微技能訓練，即Scanning for Background Information與Revising Assumptions。
值得提出的是，這套教材還注意結合最常見和最實用的情景，每章圍繞一個主題進行聽力訓練。這些主題覆蓋面廣而且很現實，例如既有日常生活的話題(超市、業餘愛好、旅遊等)，也有學生十分關心的主題(就業選擇、個人困惑、面試、未來事業等)。由於這套教材是為以英語為外語的學生編寫的，因此它不僅介紹國外的情景，使學生對英語國家的文化習俗有所了解，而且引導學生結合本國的實際進行比較和討論。這就不僅使學生有話可說，而且有親切感。
這套教材的另一個特點就是它有十分豐富的練習，而且是以練習為主體。教材在培養微技能時不是進行理論講解，而是通過大量練習讓學生熟練掌握這些微技能，以取得“從用中學，熟練掌握’’的效果。因此，可以說這是一套以聽力技能訓練為主線，全面培養學生綜合運用英語能力的教材，這和我們現在使用的許多單純培養聽力能力的教材有著根本的區別。練習形式多種多樣，有個人作業，也有雙人、小組等互動型練習。多數練習都是開放式的，要求學生主動提供答案，使學生學得主動，練得主動，做到了以學生為中心。
