簡 介
影片主人公Hansel出生於冷戰時期的東德。早在孩提時代他便經常收聽一家軍隊電台播出的美國搖滾樂。Hansel整日陶醉在這種亢奮喧鬧的音樂之中，夢想成為一名搖滾樂手。終於，這一天似乎不再那么遙遠。一名美國黑人士兵Luther對他表示愛慕之情，並答應給予他幫助。但麻煩的是，Hansel必須同他結婚才能和他一起去美國。因此他唯一的出路是改變自已的性別。無奈之下Hansel做了一次變性手術。手術做得非常糟糕，Hansel的陽具因而被割去大半，只剩下1英寸，這便是“ANGRY INCH” （憤怒的1英寸）一詞的由來。Hansel戴上一頂金色假髮，改名Hedwig，告別過去，帶著對未來的美好憧憬，前往美國。
到達美國後Luther移情別戀並拋棄了Hedwig。他決心振作起來，以女性的身份自居，並組建了一支女子樂團在酒吧獻唱。一個男孩Tommy被Hedwig的妖冶迷住了，跟隨他一起玩音樂。兩個單純的男人在一起創作了很多優秀的作品，樂隊逐步走向成功。Tommy愛上了Hedwig，然而當發現Hedwig性別的真相時他被擊垮了，狼狽地逃離了他身邊。
Tommy私自憑藉Hedwig創作的歌曲名噪一時。Hedwig擺脫不了內心的失衡，希望討回本屬於自己的成功。於是他組建了The Angry Inch（憤怒的寸莖）樂隊，並與擔任和聲的Yitzhak結婚，然後就像一個影子般跟蹤Tommy的演出，努力唱對台戲。樂隊的經紀人想方設法為Hedwig討回公道但總是無功而返，最後Yitzhak叛離了樂隊。
入不敷出的Hedwig走上街頭和妓女搶起了生意。這時Tommy出現了，表示希望Hedwig能回到他身邊，並表示讓他成為名正言順的詞曲作者。但一場車禍後兩人的往事曝光，Tommy面對媒體矢口否認，甚至說“我連他是男是女都不知道”。Hedwig對他心灰意冷。
但這一負面訊息反而讓Hedwig走上娛樂圈的前台。作為性別模糊並與巨星有染的個性歌手，他出現在“100位最具娛樂價值人士”名單中，突然就大紅大紫起來，並且樂隊受邀在紐約時代廣場進行公演。Yitzhak也回到了樂隊中。在那場盛大的演出中，Hedwig回想一生深感諷刺，突然頓悟。他砸毀了吉他並且扔掉掉了假髮，當眾撕開上衣扯下假乳房。他終於在最後輝煌而又虛假的一刻敢於直面自己，用自己的本色演出並博得了觀眾真誠的讚賞。
最後演出歸於沉寂，Hedwig全裸著在城市寂靜的黑夜中走向無名的遠方。
