出處：《呂氏春秋·遇合》。“人有大臭者，其親戚兄弟妻妾，知識無能與居者，自苦而居海上。海上人有說其臭者，晝夜隨之而弗能去。”
翻譯：有人身體散發奇臭，他的親族兄弟妻妾，包括所有認識他的人都無法和他呆在一起，他自己很煩惱於是住到了海邊。海邊卻有人喜歡他的臭味，日夜跟隨離他不得。
通假字： “說”通“悅”，引申為喜歡。
喻義：一般用來比喻：癖好與眾不同的人。
舉例：三國魏·曹植《與楊德祖書》：“人各有好尚，蘭蓀蕙之芳，眾人之好好，而海畔有逐臭之夫。”
CHASING AFTER THE SMELL
There was a very foul-smelling person. Not one of his paternal or maternal relatives by blood or marriage， his elder or younger brothers， his principal wife， concubines， or acquaintances was able to live together with him. He himself was distressed by this and so went to live by the seashore. There were people at the seashore who liked his smell； they followed him day and night
