艾莉薩為了逃離瘋狂前男友而接下一個中國家庭的管家工作，來到偏僻鄉下的她剛好遇上中國的鬼月，所有鬼魂都將在這個月當中從地獄來到人世，深信習俗的女主人警告她得遵守鬼月禁忌：不在夜間吹口哨、不要輕易回頭、不打擾陰魂棲息，否則將會有不好的事情發生。
但艾莉薩卻不信邪，依舊故我，然而當飢餓許久的猛鬼再度回到人間，怪事接連發生，艾莉薩將親身體驗鬼月禁忌的恐怖，讓她不得不相信這個流傳千年的古老傳說。
