Today I read the Paragraph 8 to 9.
In the eighth paragraph, I find ‘hiring’ and ‘firing’ are antonymic. As we know, ‘hire’ means ‘employ’ and ‘fire’ means ‘let employees be out of work’. The phrase ‘ethnic diversity’ draws my attention. I know the synonym of the word ‘ethnic’ is ‘national’, and the ‘diversity’ is the noun form of ‘diverse’. But I don’t know the meaning of this phrase. The reference gives me the answer. It means ‘varied nations’. This phrase relates to the phrase ‘racial discrimination’. It means ‘treating people unfairly for their particular races.’ I feel puzzled about a phrase ‘all too’. I know ‘know something well’ means ‘understand something well’, and obviously, the ‘all too’ are used as a modification of ‘well’ and it denotes ‘a higher extent or degree than is desirable’’. The phrase ‘a year of profits’ attracts me. It is interesting. Does it means the profit’s a year? Of course, it is wrong. It means ‘annual profits’. What the ranks about ‘own ranks’ in this paragraph? The article hasn’t given the answer directly. But we can guess by the context. The explanation of the ‘own ranks’ is ‘the company’.
In the first sentence of the ninth paragraph, I misunderstand the meaning of a word ‘celebrate’ so that I read this paragraph with confusion. The reference tells that the meaning is ‘to praise someone or something’ not ‘enjoy an occasion’ as I thought. meanwhile I feel confused why the author uses a word ‘active’. Maybe there is a phrase about ‘make’. After I consulted a dictionary, I know it means ‘make use of something physically or mentally.’ I want to introduce a complex word---‘high-profile’. When I find its explanation, I feel surprised about its meaning---attractive. I find a Familiar phrase ‘call for’. I have met many phrases, which relate to ‘call’. So I can’t make sure the explanation of this phrase. I list phrases about ‘call’ in a book so that I will learn by heart about them at free time.
In this part, I learn many phrases, words, grammar and the idea. The most important is the idea that how to keep the outstanding employees.
