Unit 6 1-8
When read the first paragraph, I was puzzled by the word “consumerland” ,so I refered to the dictionary. I found the word “consumerland” is an amusing term used to describe the consumer society. And the phrase “inhabitants of consumerland” refers to the consumers. At first, I coundn’t understand the meaning of “masses of”, I found the words in the dictionary, it means “a lot of people or things”, And I wanted to know what’s the meaning of a minor supporting role”, so I asked the classmates, they told me that it means “the effect is very small and secondary inportance.” In the last sentence, I wanted to know why the author put the words “they think” in the middle of the sentence, whether it is the same with putting the words at the first of the sentence. I will ask the teacher.
When read the paragraph two, I was attracted by the words “dramatic effects”, In my opinion the dramatic effects were that people will buy the things only because of the ads. Sometimes I will do the same things with the dramatic effects. I couldn’t understand the meaning of the words “below the level of conscious awareness”, at last, I known it means “unconscious or unaware” , but why the author don’t use the one words. In the last sentence, I was puzzled by the words “all but ignored”, I refered to the dictionary, I found the words “all but” in the sentence means “all excenpt”, it means “all except ignored”.
When read the paragraph three, I was puzzled by the word “attack”, I refered to the dictionary, and I found the word “attack” in the sentence means “a vigorous attempt to persuade consumers to buy their products”. But I couldn’t understand the meaning of the first sentence, why the person unaware of advertising’s influence on him is precisely the one most vulnerable to the adman’s attack? I know the meaning of the words “delight in”, it means “get pleasure from”, But I couldn’t understand why the advertisers delight in the audience?
When read the paragraph four and paragraph five, I could understand all the meaning, but I don’t know why the not true ads are allowed to issue in our daily life. The not true ads will bring bad affect for our life. In other words, the not true ads are lies, will bring wrong informations for the people, but it is allowed.
When read the paragraph six, I was puzzled by the meaning. I couldn’t understand why the author says the “better” means “best”, but “best” only means “equal to”. I need to ask the author tells us a good way to distinguish between true ads and illussion ads. It is very important as a consumer, because ads will change your mind when you buy something. And in the paragraph eight, the author will tell us the way about illusion of superiority. We need to know it very clear. It’s good for our daily life.
