Today,I read the article in unit 4,which is about cheating,I read the passage from1-8,and I feel not very well maybe [add because] the theme is so serious.
In the first passage, “to get a handle”means “ [add to] understand”.In this sentence,the author makes an assumption compared with American eating pattern in order to tell reader [readers] the result is disappointed [diappointing].Everyone care [cares]about their weight but their eating pattern haven’t [hasn't]changed.The word “record sales”in the last sentence of the para.1,I think,it make [makes] a metaphor in order to modify there are a lot of Americans eat [eating] fast food and seem to fail to take into account the fact that it will make them fat.
“Talk to students”means if you talk to students. “yes” here means emphsize and affirm but actually cheating also is [is also] a very big problem at school even they ignore it.
In the third passage, “one that shatters the myths about who cheats and why”is the apposition of picture. “one” here also point [points] “the picture”.There are four “of” and they means the behavior in top school,the habits, parents and a problem seperately.In this passage , the author use [uses] “take root”, “bud”, “flower” ,to make the sentence vivid and fluency.
Turn [Turning] to the fourth passage,the first sentence puzzled me a lot.I don’t know “to cut down”in this sentence,maybe it means decrease I guess.The school is trying to decrease the cheating by several approaches but they find it has [they have]not effected.The psychologists anylize the root of cheating is home,it is about the family. “make occasional failure” means some little failure like fail in the exam.It can’t be the obstacle for students’prospect.In the last sentence ,I don’t [add know] what is [delete] the “urge” mean [means],in my mind it is a verb,but I think here it is a noun.After looking it up in the dictionary,I know “the urge”here means desire.
To the para5,my understanding of this paragraph is the biggest responsibility is students’ parents.The word “abdicating”mean [means]escape here.Many parents believe it is not their responsibility ,but actually they don’t tell their children cheating is the same as dishonest. “To them”, “them”here point a lot of parent who abdicat the responsibility. “writing a couple of math formulas on their hand”is make the cheating reificationally.
In para6. “get outraged”means angry,which I know it in the dictionary.The next sentence the author describe the children’s parents who cheat in their work ,which leads children confused and inconsistency.The [they] don’t understand whether they can cheat in the exam or not. “Drive” is a good word here ,I think.
