《Where did you sleep last night 》是一首歷史久遠的美國民間歌曲，最早可以追溯到1870年的《in the pines》這首歌，當時只有簡單的四句歌詞唱到Black girl，black girl，don’t lie to me，所以這首歌也稱作《black girl》。之後，The Longest Train又被加入到《in the pines》里（大概那個時候火車用來運樹木及煤炭，它進入in the pines也是理所當然的事），後來，decapitation這個詞又與train聯繫起來（大概用火車砍頭不費吹灰之力緣故）。加了後述的兩個元素，這首《Where did you sleep last night 》被理解起來，含義就豐富多啦。分三個層面多重意思來理解，一，走進松林以及被斬首的人，明喻成一個男人或一個女人或一個少年或一個丈夫或一個妻子或一對農民等；二，松林用來暗喻性、欲望、死亡、獨孤等；三、而火車也是用來暗喻殺死愛人、剝奪愛情、拆散家庭的恐怖工具。因此，就有了多種版本解讀，加上後來藝人的加工，各種各樣的故事都有了，體現在包括詩、歌、小說等文學創作以及電影、話劇等各種藝術形式上。
這裡介紹一種對Nirvana的《Where did you sleep last night 》的解讀版本。歌者便是那位被火車碾過的身首異處的丈夫，他正在傾訴自己的悲催愛情故事，從泣血的歌聲中可以聽出即便身首異處，即便已被埋在陰冷的太陽永遠無法照亮的松林中 （in the pines where the sun don’t ever shine ），這位痴情的丈夫依然用悲戚的歌聲在問：“My girl，my girl，don’t lie to me，Tell me where did you sleep last night。”他全然不顧究竟是誰害死了他，只是用近乎嘶啞而絕望的嗓音向她講述著自己在陰暗的松林深處整夜顫慄的處境（In the pines！in the pines！Where the sun will never shine. I would shiver the whole night through）……
對於這樣悲切的來自的冥界的呼喚及傾訴，沒有人給出回應，因此，柯特科本在歌曲結尾處用那一聲洞穿滄桑苦旅的悲鳴，仿佛是在做出回應…….
