創作背景
另一版單曲封面《American Boy》最初由will.i.am和其它三位音樂人於2006年在洛杉磯的錄音室開始構思。2007年初，歌曲的伴奏被約翰·傳奇和埃斯特爾選中，隨後二人在伴奏的基礎上開始創作。約翰·傳奇表示，伴奏的旋律使他聯想到一場浪漫的旅行，於是便想出了歌曲的首句歌詞 （Take me on a trip） 。
而據歌曲的演唱者埃斯特爾回憶道，整首歌曲的創作靈感由約翰·傳奇提出。當她在工作室里閒著的時候，約翰向她提議創作出一首關於與美國男孩會面的歌曲。埃斯特爾認為這是項簡單的工作，因為她在紐約有許多男性朋友。而說唱歌手坎耶·韋斯特在創作時則擔心無法使用舞曲的節奏來完成說唱的演繹 。
歌曲的伴奏同樣用在製作人will.i.am於2007年9月發行的個人專輯《Songs About Girls》的歌曲《Impatient》 。
